5 SIMPLE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CHILD'S READING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Children love holidays and they keep the expectations close to their hearts as they navigate the learning tasks and assessments that are always thrown at them by the learning systems.However, this period can bring worthwhile benefits if the parents utilize them to enhance some aspects of the child 's life long learning that will benefit them in the long run. One of these areas is the enhancement of their reading culture.

To drive the point home, the holidays are a wonderful opportunity to help your child become a more confident and enthusiastic reader.
Waiting to buy expensive materials is not necessary.Make do with publications
within your reach. Patronizing local libraries is not out of place.

The tips below can be very helpful:

1. Make Reading a Daily Habit

Set aside 15–20 minutes every day for reading. It could be a storybook, newspaper article, magazine, or age-appropriate online material.

2.Let Your Child Read Aloud

Encourage your child to read aloud to you. Listen patiently and gently help with difficult words. This improves fluency, pronunciation, confidence, and expression.

3. Ask Questions About What They Read

Don't stop when the story ends. Ask questions such as:

- What happened in the story?
- Why did the character do that?
- What do you think will happen next?
- What lesson did you learn?

This develops comprehension and critical thinking.

3. Introduce New Words

When your child meets an unfamiliar word, don't simply give them the meaning. Encourage them to:

i.)sound it out,
ii)look at the surrounding words for clues,
iii)try to explain what they think it means,

iv)Then check the dictionary.

4. Ask them to use the new word in a sentence.

5. Make Reading Enjoyable

Avoid making every reading session feel like an examination. Let your child choose some books or topics they enjoy.

A child who enjoys reading is more likely to practise reading.

Remember: Reading improves through regular practice, encouragement, and the right guidance - not pressure.
