You've been using these 5 English words wrong your whole life — and no one corrected you.

1. "Literally" Doesn't mean "figuratively." If you say "I literally died laughing," you didn't. Save "literally" for things that actually happened.

2. "Could care less" The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less." If you *could* care less, that means you still care some.

3. "Irregardless" Not a real word. The word you want is "regardless." Adding "ir-" doesn't add emphasis — it just adds confusion.

4. "Less" vs "Fewer" Use "fewer" for countable things (fewer apples), "less" for uncountable things (less water). "10 items or less" at the grocery store? Technically wrong.

5. "Your" vs "You're" "Your" shows possession ("your book"). "You're" is short for "you are" ("you're right"). Mixing these up is the fastest way to lose credibility in writing.
