𝗙𝗨𝗚𝗔 𝗩𝗖 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗨𝗚 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀
The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, has charged the newly elected executive members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to be partners in progress with the University Management rather than a confrontational body.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge on Monday, 28 September 2026, during the inauguration of the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government Executive, held at the 284-capacity lecture theatre of the University. Represented by the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Emmanuel L. Amase, Professor Geidam urged the new SUG leadership to work closely with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs in the discharge of their official responsibilities.

He advised the student leaders to be proactive in identifying and reporting issues affecting students through the appropriate channels to facilitate their prompt and effective resolution.
According to him, as representatives of the students and stakeholders in the University community, the SUG leadership has a role to play in decision-making and promoting a peaceful and conducive environment for teaching and learning.

In her remarks, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Phidelia Ramatu Waziri Ogwu, urged the newly inaugurated student representatives to remain committed, hardworking and law-abiding in the discharge of their responsibilities. She encouraged them to uphold the rules and regulations of the University and work towards delivering on the mandates entrusted to them by their fellow students.

Dr. Waziri Ogwu noted that the inauguration marked the first time an outgoing SUG President had formally handed over the leadership mantle to an incoming President, describing the development as a positive step towards ensuring continuity and a smooth transition in student leadership.

The newly elected SUG officials subsequently took their oath of office before the University Legal Officer.

In his acceptance speech, the new SUG President, Comrade Haruna Musa Mohammed, pledged to operate within the framework of the University’s laws and electoral regulations. He assured the University Management of his administration’s readiness to serve as a partner in progress and promised to represent the interests of students responsibly.

Comrade Haruna further assured the students that his administration would pursue their legitimate rights through lawful and established channels, while promoting peace, unity and responsible student leadership within the University.

The Federal University Gashua (FUGA) Chapter of the National Union of Yobe State Students (NUYOSS), has honoured the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, and the Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mamuda, with awards for their outstanding contributions to the development of the institution.

‎Presenting the awards, the NUYOSS President, Saleh Muhammad Abubakar, said the honour bestowed on the Vice-Chancellor was in recognition of his remarkable achievements since assuming office a few months ago, noting that the university had witnessed rapid development within a relatively short period.
‎
‎The President also said the union found it necessary to honour the Registrar for his valuable contributions towards the growth and development of the university.
‎
‎Receiving the award, Prof. Yaqub Ahmed Geidam thanked NUYOSS for recognising the efforts of the university's management. He described NUYOSS as an umbrella body representing Yobe State students across various institutions and recalled that he was once a member of the union.
‎
‎The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to remain focused on their studies, stressing that academic excellence is essential if they are to contribute meaningfully to the development of Yobe State and Nigeria.
‎
‎Earlier, the Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mamuda, also expressed appreciation to NUYOSS for the recognition, describing the award as an encouragement to continue contributing to the progress of the university.
‎
‎Also speaking, the Patron of NUYOSS at FUGA, Prof. Ahmed Ibrahim Jajere, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his numerous achievements since assuming office and reaffirmed his support for the union.
‎
‎Present at the occasion were the Deputy Registrar and Staff Adviser of NUYOSS, Mohammed Auwal Namaliya Dachia; Hamza Abubakar Malli; the Vice-Chancellor's Personal Assistant, Mustapha Gubo Zanna; the Head of the Administration Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Satomi Bukar; and other NUYOSS executives.

‎The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Yobe State, Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, has urged academic staff to pursue impactful research that can attract equipment and facilities to strengthen laboratories and advance teaching and learning.
‎
‎Professor Geidam made the call when he received a moisture analyser and a digital camera donated to the Department of Animal Science by a research team led by Professor Johnson Sunday Alao, through the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr Ali Bulama.
‎
‎The Vice-Chancellor commended Professor Alao and his team for the gesture, noting that research projects could provide opportunities for academics to acquire valuable equipment that would continue to serve the university long after completion of the projects.
‎
‎He urged academic staff to initiate meaningful and impactful research, stressing that equipment acquired through such projects could be retained by the university and deployed to strengthen teaching, learning and further research.
‎
‎He also called on other researchers to emulate the gesture by donating relevant equipment to their departments after completing their projects.
‎
‎Professor Geidam further charged the Department of Animal Science to use the donated equipment judiciously and ensure that the facilities contribute meaningfully to research and academic development.
‎
‎Speaking on behalf of the research team leader, Professor Johnson Sunday Alao, the project's Technical Officer, Muhammad Kalli, said the equipment formed part of the facilities used during research on Typha grass under the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) Project.
‎
‎Kalli explained that following the completion of the project, the team decided to donate the equipment to the Department of Animal Science to provide a lasting research resource for staff and students.
‎
‎The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr Ali Bulama, and the Head of the Department of Animal Science, Professor Lawan Adamu, expressed appreciation to the research team for the donation and assured the Vice-Chancellor that the equipment will be properly utilised and maintained for future research and academic activities.

‎‎The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Yobe State, Prof. Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, has warned the Fulani community residing on university land to keep their livestock away from the institution's farmlands, plantations, and facilities.
‎
‎Geidam gave the warning when he received a delegation of the community, led by the Lamido of Garin Lamido, Lamido Ahmadu, on a courtesy visit to his office.
‎
‎The Vice-Chancellor said roaming livestock had been causing damage to farmlands, plantations, and other university property, while their movement around lecture areas and buildings was also creating sanitation concerns.
‎
‎He directed the community to ensure that their animals were properly controlled, warning that continued encroachment and destruction of university property could force the management to take appropriate measures.
‎
‎Geidam also urged community elders to caution their children against acts capable of compromising the security of the university. He specifically warned against conspiring with persons involved in stealing university property or providing them with shelter, information, or other forms of cover.
‎
‎He assured the community of the university's commitment to peaceful coexistence, while urging them to cooperate with the institution in protecting its land and property.
‎
‎Earlier, Lamido Ahmadu apologised for the concerns raised and expressed the community's readiness to cooperate with the university, while appealing for consideration of its members in employment opportunities and admission to study at FUGA.
‎

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, has urged researchers and academics to make greater use of the greenhouse facility at the Centre for Irrigation and Desertification Studies (CIDS) to advance research, promote entrepreneurship and equip students with practical skills for self-reliance after graduation.

Professor Geidam gave the charge on Thursday 17th Sept. while inspecting the greenhouse and witnessing the harvesting of cucumber cultivated at the facility as a trial project.
The Vice-Chancellor described the initiative as a practice that should be encouraged and expanded, stressing that the major challenge facing many graduates today is employment.
He said the University would explore ways of incorporating greenhouse farming into its entrepreneurship training programmes, particularly through relevant TETFund interventions, to enable students to acquire practical agricultural skills that could provide them with alternative sources of income after graduation.

According to him, the cultivation of high-value crops such as green pepper, tomatoes and other vegetables under controlled conditions could provide a viable avenue for entrepreneurship.
“If we can teach our students the strategy of doing this type of plantation, it will be a very good avenue for entrepreneurship, and I am sure they will have something doing after graduation,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Professor Geidam further directed that financial analyses should be conducted on the crops cultivated in the greenhouse to determine their profitability, production costs and potential yields. He noted that such information would help provide students with practical knowledge on investment requirements, expected harvests and potential returns.

He added that equipping students with relevant entrepreneurial and agricultural skills would reduce dependence on limited government employment opportunities and enable graduates to become self-reliant and, in turn, employers of labour.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the Director and technical staff of CIDS for reviving the greenhouse facility and encouraged academics from other centres, departments and relevant disciplines to take advantage of the facility for research.

Professor Geidam reiterated the University’s commitment to supporting initiatives that combine research, practical skills development and entrepreneurship, saying such efforts would contribute to taking FUGA to greater heights.

Earlier, the Director of CIDS, Professor Aminu Maidala, represented by the Acting Director, Dr Auwalu Garba Gashua, informed the Vice-Chancellor that the greenhouse had remained largely unused for some time until the Centre’s technical staff decided to revive it by cultivating cucumber as a trial.

He explained that the successful growth of the cucumber, despite the fact that some recommended agronomic practices were not fully followed, demonstrated the potential of the facility for crop production and research.

According to him, standard spacing for cucumber requires at least one metre between rows and 60 centimetres between stands to allow proper hanging of vines, and quality fruit development.
Despite the challenges, he said, the trial has proven successful, with the crop expected to continue producing for the next 12 to 14 weeks after the first harvest.

Dr Gashua said the cucumber variety used was a hybrid obtained from Jubaily and had produced a significant number of fruits.
“This is the third harvest, and for the next three months we will continue to harvest,” he said.

He noted that the experience subsequently encouraged the Centre to commence a structured research experiment on tomato production.

According to him, the ongoing tomato research involves the application of recommended doses of inorganic and organic fertilisers, including combinations of the two, to determine which treatment produces the most desirable results.
He explained that, unlike the cucumber cultivation which was initially a trial, the tomato cultivation constitutes a research project designed to generate useful data for agricultural production.
The Acting Director also appealed to academics, particularly researchers in Agronomy, Forestry and related disciplines, to make greater use of the greenhouse and other facilities available at CIDS for their research activities.

He stressed that as a Centre established to promote research in irrigation and desert-related studies, CIDS has facilities that could support a wide range of research projects relevant to the agricultural and environmental challenges of the region.
