Staff and students of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management actively participated in an engaging bird-watching exercise organised by the Gashua Bird Club.

The activity provided a unique opportunity to observe diverse bird species in their natural habitats, while enhancing practical knowledge of wildlife conservation and biodiversity monitoring. It also fostered collaboration, environmental awareness, and a deeper appreciation for nature among participants.

This initiative highlights the Department’s commitment to experiential learning, research, and the promotion of sustainable environmental practices.

In strong support of the Green Initiative championed by the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gashua, 200 and 300-level students of the Department took a bold step toward environmental sustainability through a tree planting exercise.
The students planted Black currant (Ribes nigrum) trees at the New Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Agriculture, contributing to campus greening and biodiversity enhancement.
This hands on activity forms part of the practical component of the courses FWM 205/FOW 301 (Principles of Silviculture), demonstrating the Department’s commitment to blending academic excellence with real-world environmental action.

As part of the Department’s drive to promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship, students are trained in the construction of tree guards. These tree guards, made from the readily available Azadirachta indica (Neem tree), are both affordable and marketable, with each unit selling for ₦3,000–₦4,000. Impressively, students can produce up to 10 tree guards daily, creating a viable source of income while contributing to environmental sustainability.
