PRESS RELEASE
FEBRUARY 24, 2026
C***A PRESIDENT ADVOCATES TRANSPORT SECTOR PROFESSIONALISATION, INDUCTS 68 STUDENTS, 10 STAFF AT MARITIME UNIVERSITY
Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, FInstTA, National President, Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (C***A), has called for the urgent professionalisation of Nigeria's transport sector, describing practitioners as indispensable to national development.
He spoke on Tuesday, 24th February 2026, at the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, during a workshop and induction ceremony jointly organised by C***A and the university. The event, themed "Artificial Intelligence: A Transformative Paradigm in the Maritime Industry," gathered academics, industry stakeholders, and students.
A total of 68 students and 10 staff members were formally inducted into C***A, expanding the institute's presence within the academic community.
In his address, Prince Obayendo commended NMU's disciplined approach, likening the institution's regimented culture to that of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He urged inductees to embrace professionalism and leverage technology to address sectoral challenges, citing the lack of digital navigation tools on inland waterways as a critical gap requiring innovative solutions.
"Transport professionals are a critical factor of production. No economy can thrive without us," he stated. "Yet non-professionals dominate leadership positions in transport agencies and ministries. This must change."
He urged practitioners to invoke C***A's enabling Act No. 27 of 2019 to challenge the appointment of unqualified persons to transport-related roles.
"For you to head any transport agency, you must be a professional. I cannot become Minister of Finance without an accounting background. The same standard must apply to transport," he said.
Drawing parallels with the pharmaceutical sector's transformation from "chemists" to a fully regulated profession, Prince Obayendo expressed confidence that the transport sector could achieve similar progress through sustained advocacy and legal instruments.
"We have the law, the talent, and the will. Now is the time to act," he added.
The workshop featured paper presentations on artificial intelligence in maritime operations. Highlights included a guard of honour by students and the induction ceremony.
Prince Obayendo praised the C***A-NMU partnership as one that would stand the test of time and encouraged inductees to remain ambassadors of excellence.
"We have decided to be transportants. No turning back," he declared.
