Many parents think reading improves with longer lessons.
It doesn't.
Children learn to read through consistent practice, not exhausting study sessions.
Ten focused minutes every day is often more effective than one long lesson once a week.
Keep lessons short. Keep them enjoyable. Keep them consistent.
Small steps repeated every day build strong readers.
How many minutes do you spend reading with your child each day? Share below.

Short, consistent reading practice is more effective than long, occasional lessons.

Your child knows the sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/.
But when you ask them to read cat, they freeze.
The missing skill is blending.
Blending is the ability to smoothly join individual sounds together to make a word.
/c/… /a/… /t/ becomes cat.
Without blending, children may know every letter sound and still struggle to read simple words.
Don't stop after teaching letter sounds. Teach your child how to blend them into words.
Blending is the step that turns sounds into reading.
Has your child started blending yet? Let me know in the comments.

Letter sounds are only the beginning. Blending is what helps children start reading.

Stop Teaching Letter Names First

One of the biggest reasons children struggle to read is that they're taught letter names before letter sounds.
Think about it.
The letter B is called "bee," but in words it says /b/.
The letter M is called "em," but in words it says /m/.
Children read with sounds, not letter names.
This doesn't mean letter names aren't important. They are. But if your goal is to help your child read, teach the sounds first and introduce the names alongside them.
That simple change can make blending and reading much easier.

Your Child Doesn't Memorize Sounds. They Need to Understand Them.
Writing
Many children can sing the alphabet perfectly but still struggle to read.
Why?
Because knowing letter names is not the same as knowing letter sounds.
Reading starts with sounds. When a child understands the sound each letter makes, they can blend those sounds into words like cat, sit, and dog.
Don't rush to memorization. Build understanding first. That's what creates confident readers.
