ARE YOU WASHING YOUR NETS?
âHe noticed two empty boats standing at the waterâs edge while the fishermen washed their nets.â Luke 5:2 TLB
Why would fishermen wash nets that hadnât been used? The answer is they were quitting because of an overnight problem. âWe have fished all night and caught nothingâ (see v. 5). Their expectations had been destroyed. They believed that the way things were was the way theyâd be. They were beaten!
Thatâs when Jesus showed up. He came to where they were; He walked right into the middle of their disappointment with a solution. First, He asked them for their boat and used it to preach to the crowd and heal the multitudes. Child of God, turn everything over to Himâall you have, all you are, and all youâll ever beâand let Him use you for His highest purposes. Next, He gave them a word that only faith could receive: âLaunch out into the deep and let down your nets for a draughtâ (Luke 5:4 KJV). Can you see now why He has to wait until youâve done everything you know to do? Only then are you ready to listen; even though His Word doesnât seem to make sense, youâre ready to obey without question.
Are you discouraged today? Is it your ministry, your marriage, your job, or your health? You may be washing your nets, but itâs not over. Who told you God wasnât going to bless you again? Who told you He wasnât going to bring victory out of your ashes? Itâs not over until He says itâs over. If He can fill empty nets for those discouraged disciples, then you donât have a problem He canât take care of.

THE WORST FAILUREâŚIS FAILURE TO TRY
âBe strong and of good courageâŚfor the Lord your God is with you.â Joshua 1:9 NKJV
Itâs impossible to live successfully without taking risks. Leo Buscaglia wrote: âTo laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out to another is to risk involvement⌠To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is to risk being called naĂŻve. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair, and to try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothingâŚOnly the person who risks is truly free.â
Franklin Roosevelt spent much of his life battling illness and was confined to a wheelchair. Yet he became one of Americaâs greatest presidents. He said: âIt is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.â In The Pursuit of Excellence, Ted W. Engstrom gives this advice about the importance of trying: âStarting today, you can begin to enjoy using and developing your giftsâŚIf youâve always wanted to write, then write something, a short article, a poem, an account of your vacation.
Write it as if you were going to be published; then submit it somewhere. If youâre a photographer, gather your best pictures together and submit them as entries in a contest. If you think youâre a fair tennis player or golfer, enter some tournaments and see how you do. You may not win the top prize but think how much youâll learn and experience just by trying. The worst failureâŚis failure to try!â

THE WAY UP IS DOWN
âHumble yourselves, therefore, under Godâs mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.â 1 Peter 5:6 NIV
God will not tolerate pride from anyone. If self-exalted ones refuse to humble themselves, they leave God no other choice than to do it for them. One day, pride got the better of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon: âAs he looked out across the city, he said, âLook at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendourâ (Daniel 4:30 NLT).
That was raw, unvarnished, arrogant pride. A year earlier, Daniel had told the king through the interpretation of his dream that he should change his ways. But he had ignored Danielâs warning. Now God said enough was enough and interrupted his proud moment: âWhile these words were still in his mouth, a voice called down from heaven, âO King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you! You are no longer the ruler of this kingdomââ (Daniel 4:31 NLT). During the next seven years, Nebuchadnezzar lost his sanity and was reduced to the status of an animal in the forests. Thatâs how low pride brought him!
Someone once said, âA man wrapped up in himself makes a pretty small package.â Only when Nebuchadnezzar humbled himself did God have mercy on him and give him back his sanity and his reign. Thatâs when he declared Godâs sovereignty over all kings and kingdoms: âNow I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honour the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proudâ (Daniel 4:37 NLT). So be humble!

LIVE LIKE YOU BELIEVE IT! (2)
âHe did not waver at the promise of God.â Romans 4:20 NKJV
The Archbishop of Canterbury was acquainted with an actor named Mr. Butterton. One day he asked Butterton, âWhat is the reason you actors on stage can affect your congregations with the speaking of things imaginary, as if they were real, while we in church speak of things real, which our congregations only receive as if they were imaginary?â
Butterton replied, âWe actors on stage speak of things imaginary as if they were real, and you in the pulpit speak of things real as if they were imaginary.â The world needs Christians who speak like they believe what God said in His Word is true, and who live accordingly. When Abraham was eighty, God promised him he would father a son. Twenty years later, it hadnât happened, but Abraham was standing firmly on Godâs Word: âHe did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to performâ (vv. 20-21 NKJV).
William James, the first educator to offer a course in psychology, said, âIf you want a quality, act as if you already had it.â He also said, âAct as if what you do makes a difference. It does.â Saint Augustine said, âGod loves each of us as if there were only one of us.â If you fully grasp the truth of this, itâll set you free from fear because thatâs what Godâs perfect love does (see 1 John 4:18). God canât love you any more or any less because He already loves you unconditionally, eternally. You just need to live like His beloved.

âFor as he thinks in his heart, so is he.â Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
A fascinating experiment was conducted a half century ago. Three men tested their strength on a gripping machine, with an average measure of 101 pounds of pressure. Then the participants were given a strong negative suggestion, and the experimenter told them, âYou cannot grip because you are weak.â Under the power of suggestion, their average grip strength fell to 29 pounds of pressure.
Then the experimenter said, âNow you can grip.â Their average grip increased to 145 pounds of pressure. Their strength was increased fivefold when they said, âI can,â versus when they said, âI canât.â It helps to think of Scripture as a script. While the reality of your circumstances often feels as if you are off script, youâve got to take your cues from Godâs Word. Youâve got to live as if you are who God says you are, you have what God says you have, and you can do what God says you can do. If you believe the enemyâs lies, youâre in deep trouble. But if you believe Godâs Word, itâll get you and keep you out of trouble.
When youâre lonely, donât forget His promise, âI will never leave you nor forsake youâ (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV). When you feel like youâve lost your way, remember His words: âA manâs heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his stepsâ (Proverbs 16:9 NKJV). When youâre battling illness, you can stand on His promise: ââFor I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,â says the Lordâ (Jeremiah 30:17 NKJV). The word for you today isâlive like you believe it!

WILL YOU HEAR CHRIST, OR THE CRISIS?
âLet us go over to the other side.â Mark 4:35 NIV
Jesus told His disciples: âLet us go over to the other side.â Next, we read: âA furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boatâ (v. 37 NIV). The disciples turned to Jesus and found Him sound asleep! They screamed, âDonât you care if we drown?â (v. 38 NIV). Jesus woke up, commanded the storm to shut up, and then said to the disciples, âDo you still have no faith?â (v. 40 NIV).
What a stunning rebuke! The sea was raging; the water was churning. Why did Jesus scold them? Simple: they didnât take Him at His Word. He said they were going to the other side. He didnât say, âWe are going to the middle of the lake to drown.â Jesus had declared the outcome. But when the storms came, the disciples heard the roar of the winds and forgot His Word. Storms are coming your way too. Winds will howl, your boat will be tossed, and you will have a choice: Will you hear Christ or the crisis? Will you heed the promises of Scripture or the noise of the storm?
God told Joshua to âmeditate in [Scripture] day and nightâ (see Jos 1:8). The word meditate means to âmutterâ over what youâre reading. The image is one of a person reciting, rehearsing, and reconsidering Godâs Word over and over. Paul says: âLet the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one anotherâ (Colossians 3:16 NKJV). Begin with a prayer: âGod, please speak to my heart today as I read.â Then read with an open heart until the message hits you.

THE WHOLE WORLD MUST HEAR GODâS WORD
âGo into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.â Mark 16:15 NKJV
In 1993, a group called AD2000 United Prayer Track came up with an innovative idea. To help realize their goal of âa church for every people and the gospel for every person by AD2000,â they established a program called âPraying through the Window.â
The âwindowâ referred to an area on the globe from ten degrees to forty degrees north of the Equator, from North Africa and Southern Spain eastward to Japan and the northern Philippines. Almost three billion people live in this area, where the most prominent religions are Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism. For the entire month of October 1993, and again in 1995, millions of Christians prayed for the people in âthe 10/40 window.â The goal was that new churches be established, and new missionaries sent to these areas. In 1993 alone, the number of churches in Albania grew from 50 to more than 300, and the number of Christian fellowship groups formed in India rose from an average of three to seventeen each day.
If your world consists only of your loved ones, your job, and your church, ask God to open your eyes to the world beyond your world. Begin praying that He will move in those nations. âAsk of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possessionâ (Psalm 2:8 NKJV). You say, âCan we realistically believe that the world will turn to Christ?â Read this: âAll the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before Youâ (Psalm 22:27 NKJV).

WHEN YOU LONG FOR COMPANIONSHIP
âThen the Lord God made a womanâŚand he brought her to the man.â Genesis 2:22 NIV
God recognised our need for companionship when He said, ââIt is not good for the man to be aloneââŚThenâŚGod made a womanâŚand he brought her to the manâ (vv. 18, 22 NIV). Most of us are social beings who are at our best around others. We garner energy and support from them. But there are those who feel a sense of shame over admitting their loneliness. They long for people to share their lives with but feel they must pretend they donât need anyone.
You should not feel shame for wanting love and social connection. Admitting your desire to be loved and taking a step toward involvement actually requires courage. Accepting that you are a person who needs to connect is healthy. But problems arise when your need for companionship controls you. When you compromise your values in order to be accepted, the results are always negative. Clinging to other people without understanding who they are or what they represent is unhealthy. And the ramifications can have not only lifelong effects but sometimes also life-threatening consequences.
Wise decisions about relationships are never to be made with a mind ruled by fear of loneliness or desperation. If thatâs where you are, being single is a better alternative right now. It need only be temporary. So do these three things:
(1) Ask God to guide you: âGod sets the lonely in familiesâ (Psalm 68:6 NIV).
(2) Live by the values youâd want your loved one to hold as well.
(3) Start with what you have to give and share with others, rather than with your unmet needs.

GROWING THROUGH LIFEâS TESTS
âSo you will be completely mature and not lacking in anything.â James 1:4 CEV
James writes: âBe glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. You know you learn to endure by having your faith tested. But you must learn to endure everything, so you will be completely mature and not lacking in anything. If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given youâŚBut when you askâŚyou must have faithâŚAnyone who doubts is like an ocean wave tossed around in a storm. If you are that kind of person, you canât make up your mind, and you surely canât be trusted. So donât expect the Lord to give you anything at allâ (vv. 2-8). Note three things in this Scripture:
1) Your faith grows when itâs tested. Youâll never know the strength of your anchor until you feel the blast of the storm.
2) God will give you wisdom to handle the test. Now, He wonât answer all your âwhysâ. So instead of questioning Him, you need to pray, âLord, how do You want to use this trial to develop me spiritually? How can I co-operate with You to reap the maximum benefit? What changes do You desire to bring about in my life?â Those are questions God will answer.
3) You must be willing to obey. Itâs possible to ask God for wisdom, then debate, stall, or mess around trying to decide whether or not to obey Him. âIf you are that kind of personâŚdonât expect the Lord to give you anything at all.â When God gives you His wisdom, your first response should be: âSpeak, for your servant is listeningâ (1 Samuel 3:10 NIV).

YOU ARE AN AGENT OF RECONCILIATION
âGodâŚgave us the ministry of reconciliation.â 2 Corinthians 5:18 NIV
Paul wrote: âIf anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting peopleâs sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christâs ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christâs behalf: Be reconciled to Godâ (vv. 17-20 NIV).
Sometimes our first reaction to learning that a fellow believer has fallen is to rush to the phone and say, âDid you hear about?â Or point an accusing finger. Or distance ourselves from that person at the very time he or she needs our prayers, love, and support. The Bible says: âAbove all things have fervent love for one another, for âlove will cover a multitude of sinsââ (1 Peter 4:8 NKJV). If the hurting cannot find mercy in the family of God, where are they going to find it? Rather than join those who point accusing fingers, we should be known as those who extend a helping hand.
Jesus did that with Simon Peter: âSatan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethrenâ (Luke 22:31-32 NKJV). Just as God has repeatedly extended His grace to you when you have fallen short of the mark, He is calling you to extend that same grace to others.

JUST PLAY YOUR PART
âHaving then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them.â Romans 12:6 NKJV
If you study famous musicians, youâll often find that they learned their craft by playing in a band or orchestra. Thatâs because certain skillsâlearning to blend with other instruments, keeping tempo, learning to play louder or softer, following the conductorâs leadâcan only be learned by playing with others. And whatâs true of a band or orchestra is even truer of a community of believers.
Jesus illustrated this in His famous parable of the talents (see Matthew 25:14-30). One man was given five talents and ended up with ten. Another man was given two talents and ended up with four. A third man was given one talent, and he buried it. In a sense, Jesus was talking about people playing their parts and how important that is to Godâs kingdom. Not everyone plays the same instrument, and not everyone has the same part. Some instruments are louder than others, and some parts are bigger than others. Itâs not how much you have that matters to Jesus; itâs what you do with what you have that matters to Him.
There are no insignificant talents in Godâs kingdom. Our talents may differ in amount, but they all come from the same source. All Christ wants you to do is play your part. He does not expect the same results, but He does expect the same effort. He never compares you with anyone else. He compares you only with you. He doesnât look at what you have; He looks at what you do with what you have. So just play your part.
