; How to prevent Appollo; A medical expert in Ilorin, Dr Misbau Lawal, has advised people to imbibe the habit of regular hand washing to avoid contracting viral and bacterial infection of the eye currently spreading. The infection, known as ‘conjunctivitis’ in medical parlance and ‘appollo’ in local parlance, is inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin, filmy membrane that covers the white portion of the eyes.According to Lawal, the conjunctiva, which produces mucous to coat and lubricate the surface of the eye, contains fine blood vessels that can be seen on close inspection.Lawal advised people to keep their hands away from the eyes and thoroughly wash hands before and after applying eye medications on infected children. He explained that conjunctivitis was a common eye problem that affected people of all age groups and one of the most common eyeinfections in children. The physician added that the most common cause of irritation of the eye layer was due to allergies in the environment, which included air pollution, smoke, pollen from trees and grass. He also explained that when the conjunctiva became irritated or inflamed, the blood vessels, which supplied it, enlarged and became more prominent, causingthe eye to turn red.According to him, symptoms include pinkness or redness in the eye red, inflamed inner eyelids, blurred vision, sandy or scratchy feeling in the eye, pus, mucous, or watery discharge from the eye.“People who work in health care settings or with children, have a high risk of exposure to the viruses that can cause viral conjunctivitis,” he warned. He also warned against sharing of towels, washcloth, cosmetics, or eye-drops with others, advising those infected to seek treatment promptly. The expert also advised that infected small children, who may forget these precautions, be kept away from school, camp, and the swimming pool, until their condition was cured. The outbreak is prevalent among children who mostly get infected from schools. In some of the hospital visited in Ilorin metropolis, many children with symptoms of ‘apollo’, were brought for medical treatment
. Russia and the US have announced an agreement
on Syria starting with a "cessation of hostilities"
from sunset on Monday.
Under the plan, the Syrian government will end
combat missions in specified areas held by the
opposition.
Russia and the US will establish a joint centre to
combat so-called Islamic State and al-Nusra
fighters.
The announcement follows talks between US
Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian
counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
The plan would need both the regime and
opposition "to meet their obligations", Mr Kerry
said in Geneva.
The opposition had indicated it was prepared to
comply with the plan, he said, provided the Syrian
government "shows it is serious".
Mr Lavrov said Russia had informed the Syrian
government about the arrangements and the
Syrian government was "ready to fulfil them".

“I am an old man now, I am 36,” he told
reporters at a press conference in New York.
“I am no longer 26 like I once was, and I am
looking at what I can do to mark an end to
my career. The plan is to play one more year.
Speaking on his post retirement plans, the former
FIFA World Player of the Year announced that he
could become a musician.
“I am immersed in new projects, related to
music and football which are, as you know,
my two passions,” he said.
“I am looking at new things that I have

Donald Trump has showered Vladimir Putin with
praise as he and rival Hillary Clinton took
pointed questions from military veterans.
The Republican presidential nominee told the
forum the Russian president "has been a leader
far more than our president [Obama] has been".
It came on the same day the chief of the
Pentagon accused Russia of sowing the seeds of
global instability.
Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, defended her judgment
despite her email scandal.
The White House candidates appeared back to
back on stage in half-hour segments in New York
on Wednesday night.

Why Trump strikes a chord with Russians
Are there any Trump links to Putin?
Quizzed by NBC host Matt Lauer on his previous
complimentary remarks about Mr Putin, Mr Trump
responded: "He does have an 82% approval
rating."
"I think when he calls me brilliant I'll take the
compliment, ok?" added the businessman.
He said Mr Putin had "great control over his
country".
Uncomfortable moments - Anthony Zurcher, BBC
News, Washington
The 30 minutes allotted to each candidate made
the proceedings feel like the political equivalent of
speed-dating.
And like speed-dating gone wrong, there was
plenty of time for the participants to bury
themselves with their words.
Mrs Clinton once again tripped up when
discussing her use of a private email server as
secretary of state.
Mr Trump found new and interesting ways to
show his tenuous command of policy details and
shower questionable praise on a US rival.

commiseration to the family and the government
and people of delta State and the Urhobos in
particular on the passage of their illustrious son
and patriarch of the Ibru family.
He urged members of his family and all who
mourn to honour his memory by constantly
upholding the values of selfless-service, inter-

.Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump
has said he will expand all areas of the US
military if he wins November's election.
Mr Trump called for more troops, more planes
and more boats at a rally in Philadelphia.
He also wants US generals to come up with a
plan to defeat the self-styled Islamic State (IS) in
his first 30 days in the White House.
Recent polls show the race for the presidency has
narrowed.
Democrats and even some Republicans have
painted Mr Trump as unfit to serve as US
commander-in-chief but he has made up some
ground on rival Hillary Clinton.
In his speech he called his vision for the US
military "peace through strength".
"I am proposing a new foreign policy focused on
advancing America's core national interests,
promoting regional stability, and producing an
easing of tensions in the world. This will require
rethinking the failed policies," he said.
"Our adversaries are chomping at the bit," he
added.
Mr Trump said his plan would be paid for by
cutting government waste, collecting uncollected
taxes and slimming down the federal workforce.
He also called for US Nato allies to meet their
obligations to spend 2% of national income on
defence.
Earlier this week, Mr Trump was endorsed by 88
former military leaders in an open letter, who
declared the Republican nominee "has the
temperament to be commander-in-chief".
Clinton 'trigger-happy'
Both Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton will take part
back-to-back in a national security forum on
Wednesday.
The forum, to be hosted by the Iraq and
Afghanistan Veterans of America, will include
questions from an audience of military service
members.
During his speech Mr Trump attacked Mrs Clinton
as "trigger-happy and very unstable".
But on Tuesday Mrs Clinton said US voters "know
they can count on me to be the kind of
commander-in-chief who will protect our country
and our troops, and they know they cannot count
on Donald Trump".
She added: "They view him as a danger and a
risk.''
Despite making support for the military a
signature issue in his campaign, Mr Trump has at
various times drawn criticism from military
members.
Most notably, he was involved in a recent spat
with family members of a Muslim-American
soldier killed during the Iraq War.
Some veterans and families of military members
killed in action protested outside Trump Tower in
New York on Wednesday.
Wednesday is a big day in the tech world. Apple is
holding its annual launch event where the new iPhone 7
is expected to be revealed.
The much-heralded device comes just as rival Samsung
has recalled its flagship Note 7 over battery issues.
The tech rumour mill has been running at fever pitch
about possible new iPhone features and gadgetry.
Many commentators expect Apple to have ditched the
headphone jack, leaving only one port.
That would force consumers to use Bluetooth
headphones or buy those compatible with Apple's
Lightning port that is also used for charging.
However, old gear won't be completely obsolete, as
Apple is expected to include an adapter jack.
Major innovations?
Recent updates of the iPhone have struggled to make a
really big splash as they have lacked major innovations.
The speculation is it will be the same with the model
due to be revealed on Wednesday in San Francisco. More
of the same - just a little bit better.
Camera quality is expected to be improved and this time
round the upgrade might mean a two-lens clicker for
some of the bigger models.
A dual-lens camera can take pictures with two different
exposures, then combine the two images for improved
picture quality.
Analysis: Dave Lee, North America Technology
correspondent
Another year, another iPhone. But then, it's hardly just
been "another year" for Apple, has it?
Since last September, when we saw the iPhone 6S and
6S Plus, the tech giant's world has been turned upside
down. A war over encryption, a declining iPhone , a
continuing struggle in China and, most recently, the tax
bill to end all tax bills .
Distractions, lots of them. And it doesn't look like the
new iPhone is going to deflect much of that attention
away.
While we're used to saying "evolution, not revolution" in
the smartphone market, this upgrade is not expected to
turn many heads nor send customers running to the
phone shop to upgrade.
If, as we expect, the headphone jack is removed from the
device, expect a lot of anger from those who don't want
to be ushered into buying wireless headphones.
Then again, Apple faced the same kind of anger when it
rolled out the smaller "lightning" charging port, but
everyone's just about got over that. Take a look at the
"old" Apple charger and tell me it doesn't look almost
comically massive. In hindsight, the right call.
A better camera would go down extremely well - more
photographs are taken with iPhones than any other
device. But some reported leaks suggest only the larger,
less popular iPhone size will get the new camera
technology.
Looking a bit further ahead, some are speculating that
Apple is holding back this time around, instead saving
new features for 2017 and what will be the iPhone's 10th
anniversary.
Other expected changes would be improved memory,
turning the home button into a touch sensor and better
speakers.
The new phone is also said to be water resistant,
handling submersion for up to 30 minutes - a feature
already offered by several of Apple's Android
competitors from the likes of Samsung or Sony.
Apple is thought to be sticking with its two sizes,
meaning there would be an iPhone 7 and an iPhone 7
Plus.
Neither is the design thought to be changing much,
giving it the same overall look as the current models.
Rumour has it there will be more colours available, for
instance reintroducing black as an option.
While the new models will be revealed to the world at
the launch, consumers will have to wait a few weeks
before they are shipped. Pre-orders are expected to
open on Friday.
The timing still is crucial. Samsung beat Apple by
releasing its Galaxy Note 7 last month. The device was
well received by users and critics alike and started
selling well.
But then reports about batteries heating up and sparking
some fires prompted Samsung to launch an
embarrassing recall last week - just days before the new
iPhone makes its debut.
While Samsung's battery problems might tilt some
prospective buyers toward the iPhone 7, Apple depends
on the ongoing success of its smartphones as they have
become its biggest source of revenue.
And after recent bad publicity ranging from issues
around security flaws to tax problems , the world's most
valuable listed company hopes the iPhone will be a hit.
Volkswagen has agreed a deal to buy a 16.6% stake in
US truck-maker Navistar.
The agreement gives the German car manufacturer a
foothold in the US truck market and Navistar a source for
new engines for its fleet of vehicles.
Volkswagen will pay $15.76 (£11.76) for each of 16.2
million new company shares - 12% above Friday's
closing price.
The deal is also creating a joint venture for procurement,
which will help Navistar reach synergies of at least
$500m (£373m) over five years.
There had been pressure on Navistar and other
companies to find technology partners, after US
regulators announced new environmental standards to
cut greenhouse gas emissions from medium and heavy-
duty trucks by up to 25% by 2027.
The company's chief executive Troy Clarke said: "Over
the longer term, it is intended to expand the technology
options we are able to offer our customers by leveraging
the best of both companies."'
Archaeologists in Jerusalem say they have for the first
time reconstructed likely designs of a Biblical Jewish
temple floor using original fragments.
Experts reassembled pieces of tiles found amid tons of
earth from the site known to Jews as the Temple Mount
and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif.
They say the tiles date from the period of the Second
Temple, during the time of King Herod about 2,000 years
ago.
The temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD
during a Jewish rebellion.
Some 600 segments of coloured stone floor have been
found since archaeologists began examining the debris
from the hilltop site in 2004.
The plateau where the temples stood is the most sacred
site in Judaism. It is joined by the Western Wall,
venerated by Jews as part of the original supporting wall
of the temple compound.
Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) is also the place
where the Koran says the Prophet Muhammad ascended
to Heaven, and is the third holiest site in Islam.
The archaeologists say the tiles probably came from
porticos in the temple's courtyards.
Piecing the fragments together "enables us to get an
idea of the Temple's incredible splendour", said Dr
Gabriel Barkay of the Temple Mount Sifting Project.
Experts say they managed to assemble seven potential
designs of how the flooring could have looked like. The
type of flooring is known as opus sectile, Latin for "cut
work", and "considered to be far more prestigious than
mosaic tiles floors", according to Frankie Snyder, from
the project's team.
"The tile segments were perfectly inlaid such that one
could not even insert a sharp blade between them," she
said.
The Temple Mount Sifting Project was established by
Israeli archaeologists in 2004 to examine debris dumped
by Islamic authorities following expansion work at an
underground mosque on the compound.
The project attracts thousands of visitors each year who
participate in finger-tip searches of the earth and has so
far turned up hundreds of ancient relics, including coins,
animal bones and pieces of pottery.
