Safe Anaesthesia For Everybody Today (SAFE-T)
Anaesthesia is a reversible loss of sensation of part or whole of the body with or without loss of consciousness.
All anaesthetists at one time or the other in their career have to manage life-threatening crises which may arise with or without warning. Early recognition and prompt intervention on the part of the anaesthetist can make the difference between life and death.
World Anaesthesia Day commemorates the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia on 16 October 1846. The objective is to raise awareness of the importance of anaesthesia as an essential component of safe surgery and the need to advance access to safe and affordable anaesthesia worldwide.
Today, 5 billion people in the world lack access to essential surgery and safe anaesthesia when needed, many of them in Africa and Asia. However, even in Europe surgery and anaesthesia are not available to all at affordable prices and at international standards. The Lancet Commission estimates that in Central Europe 680,000 people need surgery but cannot access the care they need.
Currently 70% of operating rooms in sub-Saharan Africa don’t have a pulse oximeter, an essential piece of equipment for practicing safe anaesthesia and surgical care. 41% of hospitals in Latin America, and 45% in South Asia face the same crisis.
Globally, people are dying as a result: 16.9 million people every year. This figure is four times higher than the number of people who died annually from malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis combined.
World Anaesthesia Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the role safety anaesthesia plays.
Access to safe anaesthesia and influencing change is a global issue. Safe anaesthesia is not a luxury, it's a human right. As part of its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the strengthening of health systems, the WFSA aims to make safe anaesthesia available to all.
Imagine Surgery Without Anaesthesia! No Anaesthesia No Surgery!!
O! Lord Give our eyes the power to see the hidden risks of Anaesthesia and Surgery and to do a through pre-operative assessment. Take away from us the nightmare of difficult intubations, cardiac arrest and death on the operating table. Give our hands the skills to maintain a patent airway and adequate oxygenation always. Grant our eyes the quick to see the signs of hypoxia and excessive blood loss. Take away from us the problems of shortage of Anaesthetic drugs, gases, monitors, electricity and manpower. Give us the patience and self-control to cope with slow, impatience and inexperienced surgeons. Give our surgical colleagues the wisdom to realize that when we postpone or cancel cases it is in the best interest of the patient. Amen
HAPPY WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY
Proudly Nurse Anaesthetist Saleh Nadabo
