THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL OF SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS IN NIGERIA'S EDUTAINMENT SCENE
Ever wondered how social media influencers make things go viral, from dance challenges to trending products? In Nigeria, with over 30 million social media users, their influence extends beyond entertainment. Theyโre potential educators, shaping learning while keeping it fun and engaging.
WHO ARE THESE INFLUENCERS?
First off, letโs talk about who some of these influencers are. Youโve probably heard of names like Davido, a music star whose massive following hangs on his every word, with millions vibing to his beats. Then thereโs Don Jazzy, a music mogul and social media sensation who has got fans glued to his posts across various social media platforms. Wizkid is dropping bangers, Tiwa Savage is slaying looks, Mr P (Peter Psquare) and Rudeboy are keeping the P-Square legacy alive, while Kate Henshaw and Mercy Johnson Okojie bring Nollywood flair. On the comedy front, Sabinus keeps us rolling with his hilarious skits and viral catchphrases like โsomething hooge,โ capturing everyday Nigerian life in the funniest way. Meanwhile, young actress, Uchechi Treasure Okonkwo, popularly known as Adakirikiri (AdaKirikiritv), is winning hearts with her entertaining skits and acting roles that resonate with kids and young adults, blending fun with subtle life lessons. Even global stars like Cristiano Ronaldo inspire many kids - you can see it in the way they shout โsuiiโ after scoring, copying his iconic celebration.
But it goes beyond just the entertainment crew.
WHY INFLUENCERS MATTER IN EDUCATION
Influencers matter in education because they earn followersโ trust, making them relatable and credible. They simplify complex topics into fun, bite-sized content, like sharing Nigerian history facts or explaining jollof rice chemistry in a cooking video โ pure edutainment!
One inspiring name is Barr. Doris Chinedu-okoro, the founder and CEO of Evergreen Group of Schools in Enugu. Sheโs all about empowering teachers through trainings like the Teach And Transform (T.A.T) Masterclass and uses her Facebook presence to share insights and inspire educators. Her South East Educators Conference pulls teachers from different states to tackle regional challenges, and sheโs a loud voice for better school support and teacher welfare. She is not called โThe Teacherโs Teacherโ for nothing โ showing the correlation between social media and education.
Then thereโs Dr. Kehinde Nwani, the founder and CEO of Meadow Hall Group in Lagos. She swapped law for education and now transforms it through initiatives like Meadow Hall Consult, training thousands of educators. She organizes annual education conference under The Transformational Teachers Network brand, which aims to promote excellence in education, uniting educators and stakeholders in the education sector. Active on Instagram and Facebook, she shares leadership and teaching insights. From teacher programs to educational franchises, sheโs showing how influencers can foster change.
In Nigeriaโs buzzing educational scene, Adora Igunma-Ogunyomi also stands out with her work at TheFresh Look Africa, which kicked off during the pandemic. As the founder, sheโs on a mission to transform education by training and mentoring student-teachers and new educators across Nigeria. Adora has been vital during challenges like university strikes and the pandemic, sustaining remote teacher training. Through her YouTube channel, she also shares helpful insights for teachers on navigating day-to-day challenges of the profession.
Another influential figure in Nigeriaโs edutainment scene is Dr. Grace Phillips-Ayonuwe, an Educational Administrator and the owner of GeePhill Education. Through her initiative of Port Harcourt Schools, which has become a fast-growing brand on Facebook and Instagram, she actively promotes educational initiatives and engages with the school community in Port Harcourt, making her a key player in harnessing social media for educational purposes.
Adding to the line-up, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, aka Aproko Doctor, makes health education a blast with humour and storytelling via social media, hitting millions with valuable health tips across Nigeriaโs urban and rural spots, using Pidgin English and relatable slang to keep it real.
Similarly, Dr. Jovita Chioma Alaneme, known as The Chess Doctor (Chess Doctor Jovita), is a dental surgeon empowering kids in orphanages through chess. She organizes competitions with prizes and scholarships, runs an NGO (Health to Indigent Children Foundation) with medical and skill programs, and was also a Nigerian and West African chess champion. The FIDE - International Chess Federation even recognized her with a social media impact award in 2022. As a chess tutor, she makes the game fun and easy with interactive and relatable videos โ proving that professionals can switch lanes and still boss education.
Another prominent figure in Nigeria's edutainment scene is Dr. Chioma Nwakanma-Akanno, also known as Dr Zobo. As a medical doctor and public health advocate, she uses various social media platforms to combat health misinformation and promote preventive health practices. Awarded the Healthcare Advocate of the Year 2024 by the Private Sector Health Alliance, she also runs SMILE With Me Foundation, leading health outreaches and digital education on critical health issues like cervical cancer prevention. Her innovative approach makes her a key player in social media-driven health education in Nigeria.
Another notable figure is Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro II, an Igbo linguist and historian who has made a ground-breaking contribution by publishing Fiziksi, the first-ever Physics textbook written in the Igbo language in 2024. This initiative not only promotes the preservation of the Igbo language but also makes scientific education more accessible to Igbo-speaking students. Through igbotic.net, and various social media platforms, Maazi Ogbonnaya shares Igbo learning resources and promotes cultural education, making him a key figure in Nigeriaโs edutainment scene.
HOW THEY MAKE IT WORK
Influencers engage and captivate phone-obsessed learners in some fun ways:
โข Math Puzzles: Practical math problems, like calculating change for yam and pepper, spark interest.
โข History Storytelling: Share gripping tales of Nigerian heroes in a captivating style.
โข Pidgin Vibes: Use pidgin in skits to teach concepts like greetings (โHow you dey?โ) or problem-solving (โNo wahalaโ), making learning relatable and hilarious.
Beyond content, influencers can boost engagement with Q&As and quizzes, fostering a vibrant learner community that keeps followers hooked.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Statista predicts the influencer market in Nigeria will hit US$5.3m this year โ itโs crazy how much brands are spending on influencers. For education, itโs a golden chance to collaborate with influencers and push edutainment contents that stick.
So, my question to you is: have you ever been inspired by an educator or anyone like the names mentioned above? How do you think social media influencers can best promote education โ in any form or content, beyond traditional classroom content? Do you follow any influencers who already do this?
