2go: The App That Ruled Before Smartphones Took Over

In 2007, two South African students, Alan Wolff and Ashley Peter, built a mobile app called 2go.

It started as a student project to help classmates share files and chat.

Soon, they realized it had potential beyond school. They opened it up to the public, and it quickly became one of Africa’s most popular chat apps.

At its peak, 2go had over 50 million users across Nigeria, South Africa, and other African countries.

In my opinion, I will say it was the most popular app in Nigeria between 2011 to 2014 after Facebook

People used it to chat, join chat rooms, and even buy virtual goods using “Go Credits.”

But as smartphones became more common and apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger took over, 2go’s popularity faded.

Still, for many Africans, 2go was their first taste of social networking.
