📚 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LESSON: UNDERSTANDING VOWELS, MONOPHTHONGS & DIPHTHONGS
Have you ever wondered why some vowel sounds are pronounced with one steady sound, while others seem to move from one sound to another? 🤔
Let’s make it simple! 👇
🔤 WHAT ARE VOWELS?
Vowels are speech sounds produced when air flows freely through the mouth without significant obstruction.
In English, the vowel letters are:
A, E, I, O, U — and sometimes Y.
But there is an important difference between vowel letters and vowel sounds. A vowel letter can represent different sounds depending on the word.
📌 TYPES OF VOWEL SOUNDS
For this lesson, we will focus on two major types:
1️⃣ Monophthongs
2️⃣ Diphthongs
---
1️⃣ MONOPHTHONGS
A monophthong is a vowel sound pronounced with one steady, unchanging sound.
The tongue and mouth remain relatively stable while the sound is produced.
Think of it as a single vowel sound.
Here are the common English monophthongs:
/iː/ – as in see, sheep, teacher
/ɪ/ – as in sit, ship, fish
/e/ – as in bed, pen, egg
/æ/ – as in cat, bag, man
/ɑː/ – as in car, father, palm
/ɒ/ – as in hot, dog, box
/ɔː/ – as in law, talk, saw
/ʊ/ – as in put, book, good
/uː/ – as in food, moon, school
/ʌ/ – as in cup, love, bus
/ɜː/ – as in bird, nurse, word
/ə/ – as in about, teacher, ago
👉 Easy way to remember:
MONO = ONE.
So, a monophthong = one steady vowel sound.
---
2️⃣ DIPHTHONGS
A diphthong is a vowel sound that glides from one vowel position to another within the same syllable.
In simple words, your mouth and tongue move from one vowel sound toward another as you pronounce it.
Common English diphthongs include:
/eɪ/ – as in day, name, face
/aɪ/ – as in my, time, light
/ɔɪ/ – as in boy, coin, choice
/aʊ/ – as in house, now, mouth
/əʊ/ – as in go, home, boat
/ɪə/ – as in near, ear, fear
/eə/ – as in hair, chair, bear
/ʊə/ – as in tour, pure, cure
👉 Easy way to remember:
DI = TWO.
So, a diphthong involves a glide between two vowel positions.
🎯 LET'S COMPARE THEM
Monophthong:
👉 One steady vowel sound
👉 Example: /iː/ in sheep
Diphthong:
👉 A vowel sound that glides from one position to another
👉 Example: /aɪ/ in time
🗣️ TRY THIS!
Say these words aloud:
SHEEP – SHIP – DAY – BOY – HOUSE – GO
Listen carefully to the vowel sounds. Can you identify which ones contain monophthongs and which contain diphthongs?
💡 Remember:
MONO = ONE steady sound
DIPHTHONG = A glide between two vowel positions
Understanding vowel sounds is one of the keys to clear English pronunciation and effective communication. 🗣️📖
