CLIMATIC CONDITIONS OF NORTHERN YOBE

Northern Yobe (including areas like Yusufari, Yunusari, and Machina) lies in the extreme northeastern part of Yobe State, close to the Niger Republic border. The area is mainly within the Sahel region and has a semi-arid climate.

1. Type of Climate
-Semi-arid (Sahel savanna climate)
-Characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures.

2. Temperature
-Very hot for most of the year.
-Dry season temperatures can rise above 40°C (especially March–May).
-Harmattan period (December–January) is cooler, especially at night.

3. Rainfall
-Low and irregular rainfall.
-Rainy season lasts only about 3–4 months (June–September).
-Annual rainfall is generally 300–500 mm.
-Drought is common due to short rainy season.

4. Seasons
-Northern Yobe has two main seasons:
-Dry season (October–May) – long and harsh.
-Rainy season (June–September) – short and sometimes unreliable.

5. Harmattan
-Occurs between November and February.
-Dry, dusty wind from the Sahara Desert.
-Causes cold mornings and reduced visibility.

6. Vegetation and Environmental Effects
-Sparse vegetation (short grasses, shrubs, acacia trees).
-Prone to desertification and sand encroachment.
-Farming depends mainly on rainfall and irrigation.
