African Child Education Right Initiatives, a non-profit organisation, says it is set to transform public basic school teachers’ capacity in Nigeria through its project tagged: ‘Excellent Public School Teaching Service Delivery Workshop’.

According to Yinka Olaito, executive director/lead advocate of the organisation, the intervention is “critically needed” to help Nigeria get a workable plan towards meeting the new sustainable development goal for quality education.

Olaito said the first phase of the project began two years ago, and that the second phase will begin with Lagos state basic school teachers.

“The first phase of the project was an outcome of an informal survey carried out by the organization with regards to the fundamental issues that were affecting students’ performance at the post secondary and tertiary education levels,” he said in a statement.

“It has been agreed that beyond pupils’ dedication, the quality of teachers’ personal preparedness, commitment, proficiency and dedication to their work will go a long way in determining outcomes that can be achieved.

“When the quality of basic education is laden with lots of shortcomings, it will definitely affect other advanced levels of education. The foundation is crucial and it can be a garbage in garbage out.”

Olaito explained that the project, which focuses on personal performance and evaluation of public primary school teachers and capacity development, will among others expose participants across the nation to the constant need for personal development, evaluation as well as exposure to opportunity offered by online learning tools to increase efficiency despite obvious lack of government required intervention.

He said it is being carried out in conjunction with State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) with inputs from relevant United Nations Agencies in Nigeria.
