"Hope Waddell Training Institution: 130 Years of Excellence in Shaping Nigeria's Future"
The Hope Waddell Training Institution (HOWAD) is a monumental beacon of secondary education in Nigeria, celebrating its 130th anniversary on March 8, 2025. Established on March 8, 1895, the institution has a rich history deeply intertwined with Nigeria's educational, political, and cultural development. Originally named Calabar Training Institution, it was renamed in honor of Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell, a missionary whose contributions to West Africa were deemed worthy of eternal commemoration.
The school's motto, "In Spe Gloriae Dei" (In the hope of the glory of God), reflects its mission to nurture students academically, morally, and spiritually. Over the years, Hope Waddell has produced a remarkable array of alumni who have excelled in various fields, including politics, business, education, and sports. Notable figures include:
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe: Nigeria's first Governor-General and President, whose influence extended to other African leaders like Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere.
Dr. Francis Akanu Ibiam: The first Premier of Eastern Region and an African Principal of Hope Waddell.
Chief Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu: A business magnate and one of the wealthiest men in West Africa.
Dr. Alvan Ikoku: A legendary academic whose performance in the 1924 Cambridge Exams remains unmatched in West Africa.
Prof. Eni Njoku: The founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos.
In sports, Hope Waddell pioneered the introduction of football and cricket in Nigeria, with its teams achieving historic victories in the early 20th century. The school also contributed significantly to Nigeria's 1949 UK Tourists football team, showcasing its dominance in athletics.
As Hope Waddell marks 130 years of excellence, it continues to uphold its tradition of producing leaders and innovators. The institution's legacy is a testament to its enduring commitment to education and its role in shaping Nigeria's history.
