WHAT BUILDING TAUGHT ME THAT COURSES DIDN’T
On Wednesday, 30th September 2026, BDLI participants had an insightful session with Godsend Joseph, CTO at Technoville Innovations Nigeria, on the topic “What Building Taught Me That Courses Didn’t.”
The session highlighted an important truth: the real world is different from learning.
«Courses teach you how things work.
Building teaches you how things break.»
The speaker shared valuable lessons from real-world building and problem-solving, including:
- The fastest way to learn is to understand how you learn.
- Real life is messier than tutorials.
- When you build, you live with your own decisions.
- Finishing is a skill of its own.
- Fundamentals still matter.
- You need people who are willing to tell you when you are wrong.
- The junior market can be challenging, so show your work.
One powerful takeaway was that sometimes, things simply break and nothing you studied tells you exactly why. That is where real experience, problem-solving, experimentation, and persistence begin.
The challenge to the students was simple:
Pick one annoying problem in your own life. Build the ugliest version that works.
Because learning doesn't stop at taking courses. Learn. Build. Ask. Try. Keep going.
