Edo Heath Commissioner visits EDOCNS - Applauds management for sustaining academic excellence and global best practices in the training of nurses and midwives.
The Commissioner for Health in Edo State, Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole recently was at the smart campus of Edo State College of Nursing Sciences to access the level of academic activities and other growing concerns regarding the training of students nurses and midwives.
The Commissioner was received by the Provost of the College, Mrs Mabel Olubunmi Omobude, and other top management staff of the institution.
Welcoming the Commissioner in her opening speech, the Provost stated that the visit was timely and strategic. She applauded the Commissioner for the giant strides and other milestone achievements recorded in the State Health Ministry since his assumption of office and supplicated for its sustenance.
Mrs Omobude highlighted several challenges facing the college ranging from lack of adequate manpower most especially Nurse Educators and Administrative Officers, inadequate buses for transporting students to clinical postings, the urgent need for monthly subvention by the state government to enable the college handle its running cost, and lack of adequate hostel accommodation.
However, Mrs Omobude commended the State Government under the able leadership of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for responding to the urgent need of accommodation by promptly approving and embarking on the massive construction of a two-storey, 60 rooms capacity ultra modern hostel at the campus which according to the Provost is bid to be completed before the end of the year.
In his response, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole applauded the management of the college for sustaining academic excellence and ensuring global best practices in the training of students nurses and midwives. The Commissioner commended the State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo for creating the enabling environment for exceptional services delivery in the health sector in line with the SHINE AGENDA mantra of his laudable administration.
Dr Oshiomhole reaffirmed the commitment and passionate desire of the State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo to revamping the health sector to make the good people of Edo State have undeniable access to quality healthcare services. He said one of the major challenges of the sector is the availability of qualified manpower which according to him has ignited the interest of the state government in ensuring that proper attention is given to the college to enable it provide the necessary personnel through technological and professional training.
The Commissioner promised to meticulously looked into the various concerns raised by the Provost and also bring them to the attention of the state government.
Thereafter, the Provost, Mrs Mabel Olubunmi Omobude led the Commissioner on a guided tour of the college facilities. Places within the smart campus visited are; the Science Laboratory, the Nursing and Midwifery Skills Laboratories, the CBT Laboratory, the Main Auditorium, and the College Creche. Others are the Nursing and Midwifery lecture halls, the Library, the Public Health Building, the Campus Cafe and the 60 rooms capacity hostel still under construction.
The Commissioner used the opportunity to engage in different interactive sessions with the students where the students nurses escalated the problem of proliferation of quack nurses, underpayment of nurses and midwives by private hospitals and unemployment syndrome. Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole in his words stated " We are going to embark on massive raiding of all illegal health facilities operating in Edo State and also track down these quack nurses. We can't put the lives of our people at the mercy of these cruel and unqualified personnel. We are also going to ensure that the state government gives approval to instant employment of nurses most especially midwives. We need them more in our rural communities".
Other management staff present during the commissioner visit are the Acting Deputy Provost, Mrs Lawrentta Enogieru Ofogba, the Acting Registrar, Mrs Brenda Ezekiel, the Bursar, Dr Mrs Geraldine Abu, the Librarian, Mrs Imade Adebayo Archirimi and the Director of Facility, Architect Festus Omorefe. Others are HOD of Nursing, Mrs Christy Okponavioboh, HOD of Midwifery, Mrs Violet Amen Kukoyi, HOD of General Studies, Ms Peace Imayuse Ewansiha and DSP John Agbaji rtd, the Chief Security Officer of the college.
The Commissioner was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu.
