PTA OR NOT…LET SCHOOL OWNERS BREATHE!

I wrote this In response to a post in a group I belong to but rarely comment in.

But I had to give my 1 kobo opinion as way of addressing a misnormal or misinformation that has gone on for far too long.

The original post that I responded to had to do with the issue of PTA and the writer wondered why schools refuse to have one .

Now when I see posts on the subject matter of PTA and the likes,I simply attribute it to basic ignorance(No disrespect intended and none should be taken)

Permit me to ask some questions sir/ma on the assumption that you my reader is either an entrepreneur or employee,either way,my questions still applies right?

How many times have you as an entrepreneur “gathered “ your customers together for a meeting as you so expect your children’s school to do?

How many times have you as much as asked for their opinion on matters that concerns your business?

Won’t you be taken aback if your customers were to demand a meeting with you to discuss issues that bother on your business especially in group?

Afterall,they are “stakeholders “ and it’s their patronage that keeps you in business right?

What of the bank where you keep your money,how many times have you been “consulted” before they implement any policy?

Remember,the recent cash less policy prior to elections and the suffering you went through to withdraw your own money?

Was your opinion sought?

And even when you are a shareholder,it is still well within the rights and prerogative of the bank to call for an AGM.I can’t for one remember the last time I attended one and I can quite modestly say that I hold some good shares in at least 2 top banks .

Your Pastor or Imam are not left out,how many times do you have a say in how your hard earned money you give as tithes and offering are being spent?

The funny thing with religious houses is, you can’t even decide where to sit!

Na usher go show you your seat(lol)

Taking it from the perspective of you being a customer yourself,how many times have you been invited to come and have your say before any of the other businesses you patronize to effect let’s say price changes?

Now,I know your response will likely be that it’s a different scenario because we are dealing lives right?

Especially children ,ok ,I hear you!

Let me humor you and agree with you.

Please stay with me.

Another set of quick questions please.

Have you ever asked your doctor for a patient/doctor’s meeting or association?

Or is a doctor not dealing with lives?

Or is there a PATIENT /DOCTOR ASSOCIATION somewhere I am not aware of?

Do you even as much as have a say in your hospital bill let alone discuss it?

Don’t the doctors just slam you with your bill however they deem fit and most times you even have to pay consultation fee before you see a doctor even in public hospitals.

What of the restaurants or roadside “Bukas” you patronize when you are hungry?

Or the “Aboki” you buy suya from,do you ask them to tell you the source of their food or meat or query their prices or even are a part of their association of food consumers If there is any?

Aren’t they also dealing with lives?

On the premise that you don’t know,let me enlighten you.

A school just like the examples i gave earlier is also a BUSINESS!

Yes!

The difference here if any is what each business sells as it may differ from one business to another.

While a hospital sells health and wellness via their medical services and medication and a restaurant sells food,a school sells ABC and 123 !

Or what we call educational services or products.

My point,the school owner is first of all ENTREPRENEUR!

Period!

And by the way,how many people did you come with when you were admitting your children in that school that you expect them to be accountable to you ?

Permit me to further educate you sir/ma,

A school in it’s truest essence and at it’s core is actually a “hospital”

Yes ,an educational hospital for that matter where the needs of each and every child varies from child to child.

Hence,upmost confidentiality is expected as Schools interfaces with parents and children per time.

And unless you have an ulterior motive,why do you need a group to discuss issues that concerns your child?

No be only you “waka come “?

Do you not even know that the singular daily interaction of a teacher and parent is automatically a PTA?

Abi wetin be dictionary meaning of association again ?😀

But seriously,your position as held on the subject matter is actually as result of a misnormal and misinformation that has been allowed to go on for far too long hence my taking the time from my busy schedule to give a bit of enlightenment as I don’t normally do this.

More so is the lack of standardized regulation of the education industry in Nigeria especially!

On a final note,let me say that what you can do in a school say your children’s is maybe give suggestions as an individual!

It remains at the discretion of the school owner or leader to accept or otherwise!

Let me repeat,you can only SUGGEST!

If truly your intentions as genuine, you will find a way to communicate your suggestions without lording it over the school.

Schools have several avenues for feedback like,academic review day or parent/teacher meetings where parties discuss closely issues that affect their collective interest.

If you refused to explore this option and feel so aggrieved ,you can either take it up with God or quietly exit the system as you will do with any other business.

*TEN (10) MISTAKES NOT TO MAKE AS A 21ST TEACHER*

(1.) Don't send a learner away from your class during teaching and learning as a result of bad behavior. This is because you cannot account for what the student may be doing outside and this can count against you if an accident occurs.

(2.) Don't touch a learner inordinately. This is because the learner might claim he or she was abused either sexually/physically.You may not be able to refute it.

(3.) Don't give assignments you don't have time to mark. Unmarked assignments or home work indicate incompetency/unprofessionalism.

(4.) Don't give emotional punishment to your learners. It reduces their chances of becoming a better learner.

(5.) Don't just teach within the period given to you, especially when you are preparing learners for external examinations. Do create more contact time for your learners.

(6.) Don't stay with a learner alone in a class, laboratory, office etc. Child's protection policy forbids it. Try and avoid "one corner" teaching.

(7.) Don't ask a child to kneel down for too long a time. He or she might have a health challenge you are not aware of.

(8.) Don't conspire against your school head.What goes around, comes around.

(9.) Don't be a difficult educator and avoid transferred aggression on any learner. Pocket your personal challenges and always be full of life.

(10.) Don't treat learners unequally. There should be nothing like favourite learner. Every child matters.

*DUTIES OF THE CLASS TEACHER OR FORM MASTER/MISTRESS:*

The class teacher:

a) Takes charge of a particular class and ensures the cleanliness of the classroom.
b) Marks the attendance register daily and takes note of all absentees.
c) Sees to the welfare of every student in the class as the in-loco-parentis and finds out the causes of any unduly long absence of a student from school and reports to the Vice-Principal (Administration).
d) Shall be very accessible and ready to help the students in solving their personal challenges, if any.
e) Keeps watch over their individual behaviour and constantly advises them on all aspects of their school life and refers difficult problems to the guidance counsellor.
f) Answers questions on any aspect pertaining to his/her class when required to.
g) Prepares the continuous assessment booklet , the class broad sheet and joins other class teachers to prepare the omnibus broad sheet, and finally get both the soft and hard copy of the results with the analysis.

*DUTIES OF THE SUBJECT TEACHER:*

The subject teacher:

a) Prepares a weekly lesson note and submits to his HOD for vetting before he teaches the lessons.
b) Teaches the number of periods allocated to him on the time-table.
c) Keeps a number of teaching records like; the lesson notes, subject attendance register, subject marks book, continuous assessment booklets, schemes of work, teacher's time-table, class time-table, etc.
d) Sees to the cleanliness of the classroom and its immediate environs and the well-being of the students who should look up to him for guidance and assistance.
e) Maintains discipline among his students in and outside the class, and refers serious cases to the appropriate authority.
f) Checks and makes notes given to or prepared by the students regularly.
g) Sets, marks, record class assignments and tests and examination scripts promptly.
h) Takes part in the invigilation of both internal and external examinations.
i) Attends staff, PTA and other meetings

There are times I see teachers do certain things that are not right but what may these things be?

Please note the following

📌 A teacher should be willing to accommodate any type of child he/she comes across.

Why?

Not all children are the same!

Some kids need special attention because they might be among those we refer to as the 'slow' learners.

Some need visual ings to grasp while others can learn orally.

For this, teachers need to be patient, flexible, and above all, accommodating.

📌 Teachers needs to be organized.

How?

When a teacher writes a subject on the board, he/she must make a clear indication from his/her writings that this is a subheading or a heading by using a different colour of marker.

Also, every teacher needs to have a lesson note that is neat and comprehensive.

📌 Putting tight-fitted clothes doesn't make you a good and well-dressed teacher but instead, you are passing a wrong impression to your learners and the parents.

When a teacher is modest, she is confident that her dressing would not be a reason for complaint.

How do I know if I was good at teaching or not?

Answer: Characteristics of an Excellent Teacher
1. You should know the subject matter very well.
2. Your utmost priority should be academic growthof your learners.
3. You should have an effective, productive and practical method of teaching.
4. Your learners should enjoy your presence and method of teaching.
5. You should be an excited, optimistic and eager teacher; always thinking about how to make learning better, easier, more enjoyable and more effective for your learners.
6. You should have great communication skills and accomodating nature.
7. You should be empathic towards your learners, especially those who appear to be slow learners.

*Following Instruction*
I went for a job interview on Wednesday. And I failed. 32 of us, out of 34 failed at the screening.

I arrived at the venue at 7:37 AM. That's some minutes before 8 AM that we were told to arrive. I felt they might consider punctuality among the qualities to be used.

At 9 AM, we were address by the director. And he told us they would be employing anyone who scored a 100% at the short test we were to take. Anything less than 100, you're disqualified.

Before we were served the question papers, we were told we have only 1 minute. The questions were a bit cheap. 10 questions in all. So at the start time, we all began rushing to beat time. Some of us finished the 10 questions, others couldn't.

When the HR manager collected our scripts, he went through all in a jiffy. And he separated only 2 scripts out as he went through them. Only those 2 had passed.

At first, we were stunned at how he went through 34 scripts in less than 2 minutes and graded us all. Then he told us, there was an instruction at the top of the question, "Answer only number 8."

The director came out and congratulated the 2 people who had cared to read instruction even with limited time given. That was how the both of them were employed.

I learnt a valuable lesson though: in life, always read/follow instruction. Finishing a task is not as important as doing it as you were/are told to.
