MASTERCLASS ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR LAW STUDENTS

We cannot simply erode the fact that for a lawyer to efficiently carry-out his legal services; he should gain mastery in speaking and writing, as they are considered to be requisite skills in Practice.

The use of words are germane to a worthwhile advocacy, wherein a lawyer speaks in Courtroom, while in writing he is able to convey the law in drafting and otherwise

In his book, “The Discipline of Law” Lord Denning asserted that to succeed in the profession of law, one must seek to cultivate the command of language. He put it succinctly in the following passage;

“Words are the lawyer’s tools of trade. When you are called upon to address a Judge, it is your words which count most.”

In writing, a good drafting must be evident in the command of the Queen's english. The court of Appeal, Per Danjuma J.C.A, in MAGAJI v MUSA KUYANBANA (2013) LPELR-20785(CA) (14, Paras. A-D) held:

“Drafting, being a skill that is expressed in the English Language, must convey the intent and purpose not only in clear and terse language but must show the appreciation of the English Language which is the tool of the profession.”
