Long, long ago, before the great walls, palaces, and magnificent kingdom of Benin stood, there was a land surrounded by thick forests and beautiful rivers.
The people who lived there were known as the Edo people.
In those ancient days, the land had no great king ruling over everyone. Different communities lived under their own leaders, but the people longed for peace, unity, and a strong ruler.
One day, the elders gathered beneath a large tree.
They said, “Our people need a leader who will unite us, protect our land, and bring peace among our communities.”
The elders searched for a solution.
According to traditional Benin stories, they eventually invited Prince Oranmiyan, a powerful prince from Ife, to rule the land.
Oranmiyan came to the land and became its ruler. But ruling the unfamiliar land was not easy for him.
The people began calling the place Ile-Ibinu, meaning a place associated with anger and difficulty.
Eventually, Oranmiyan decided to leave.
Before departing, he left his young son, Prince Eweka, behind.
The elders and people gathered around the young prince and raised him with wisdom and love.
When Eweka grew older, he became a respected ruler.
He brought the communities together and established a stronger kingdom.
The people began to prosper.
As generations passed, the kingdom became more organized and powerful. Its rulers became known as Obas, and Benin grew into one of the most influential kingdoms in West Africa.
The kingdom became famous for its powerful rulers, skilled craftsmen, beautiful artworks, traditions, and strong political organization.
And so, from the stories passed down by generations, the people remember how the foundations of the great Benin Kingdom were established.
🌿 MORAL OF THE STORY:
A great kingdom is not built in one day. It is built through unity, wisdom, leadership, courage, and the preservation of culture.
That is how the story of the ancient Benin Kingdom is remembered—from a small community to a mighty kingdom whose history continues to inspire generations.
