Your Excellency,

We write this open letter with utmost respect for your high office and in recognition of your constitutional responsibility to uphold justice, peace, and the rule of law within the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is pursuant to these principles that we respectfully appeal for your kind consideration regarding the continued detention of Khalifa Abdülkadir Zaria, a religious scholar and prominent community leader.

Khalifa Abdülkadir Zaria is widely regarded as a spiritual guide and a father figure to many within society. Over the years, he has contributed significantly to moral education, religious scholarship, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence among diverse communities. His influence has largely been directed toward restraint, lawful conduct, and social harmony.

Your Excellency, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) guarantees the fundamental rights of citizens, including the right to personal liberty and the right to fair hearing. It is in the interest of justice and due process that no individual should be deprived of liberty except in accordance with procedures established by law. The prolonged detention of any citizen, particularly without timely trial or clear judicial determination, raises serious legal and humanitarian concerns.

We respectfully submit that the release of Khalifa Abdülkadir Zaria—whether unconditionally, on bail, or subject to lawful conditions—would be consistent with constitutional principles and Nigeria’s obligations under both domestic and international human rights frameworks. Such a step would also contribute positively to public confidence in the justice system and reinforce national stability.

We further wish to state, unequivocally, our firm commitment to the rule of law. Should Khalifa Abdülkadir Zaria, upon his release, be alleged to have committed or to commit any offence under Nigerian law, we fully support that he be promptly investigated, charged before a court of competent jurisdiction, and dealt with strictly in accordance with due process. We do not seek immunity or exemption from the law for any individual, but rather strict adherence to lawful procedures.

Mr. President, executive discretion exercised in the interest of justice, equity, and public peace has historically strengthened democratic governance. Granting this request would demonstrate a balanced approach that upholds both national security and constitutional liberties, while fostering reconciliation and social cohesion.

We therefore humbly urge Your Excellency to use your good office to review this matter and take steps deemed appropriate under the law toward the release of Khalifa Abdülkadir Zaria, in the overriding interest of justice, peace, and the unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of our highest consideration.
