Last week, I honoured an invitation to a primary school to address an issue of late coming among teachers.

This invitation was from a proprietor. He explained that the attitude of late coming started from teachers till pupils began to inherit it.

Last week, I spoke to him and mentioned the exact time I will be there. By 7:55 am I arrived the school gate, gateman and I exchanged greetings. I asked if the owner of the school is around that I am looking for him. The gateman replied that he's not yet in school.

I entered the school promises and only a female teacher was in the school. She was conducting morning assembly. I quickly stood at the back of the tall pupils within primary 4 queue.

The lady walked to me and we greeted and I appreciated her for being the only teacher in school at that time. She was afraid, she thought I am a supervisor from state ministry of education. She asked if I'm looking for Headteacher. I answered yes. And I advised her to continue the assembly while I wait for him to arrive.

You can see the surprise upon the young lady. I don't know when she called or sent text messages, the next thing was to see three teachers running to school. And immediately they saw me standing on the assembly ground, they greeted and stoodstill waiting for what I would say. And I told them you are all welcome, go to your classes. Then, the assembly was over and all the children entered into their different classes.

I stood there watching other teachers running to school, some took a narrow road through the school. Some even asked the gateman who I am but unfortunately, he doesn't know me.

Till 8:45 am, the proprietor arrived with his car, funny enough, we never met in person. He only contacted me online on this blue app as he was recommended by another person.

He watched me well dressed, standing behind the office block, and he walked to me and we greeted. He asked if I am from the board of education. Maybe I was coming to issue him query or get the school sealed from operation. Because I overheard his school is not yet registered and approved by the ministry of education.

And I replied I am Nwebonyi OliverJunior , you requested my attention to your school to address a lingering habit of late coming among teachers and pupils and I'm here. He shouted Oh!......... Are you the man we are expecting today? I answered yes!

He took me to his office and immediately, he summoned his teachers and they welcomed me. In the light of togetherness and love, I spoke to all of them and admired their courage and dedication towards impacting the young generation of pupils.

Because, the school holds their first test to all the classes, I advised teachers to go to their classes and resume duty. They all left us. I was there with the proprietor and the headmistress. I opened the floor by asking these questions 👇👇

What is expected of a leadership?

Two of them looked at each other and smiled because they knew I was referring to them. At that moment, they pleaded guilty for coming to school late. And I advised both of them to work on themselves. I used the expression "By working on yourselves, you are working towards achieving impactful result".

Some of the problems currently in some schools today are caused by the leadership of the school. Believe it or not. A school owner coming to school by that time, do you think other teachers will learn anything meaningful from you?

Punctuality is the business of everyone starting from the leader who set the record. You reported an issue of late coming and you expected me to come around 11am to address the issue. If I happened to come by 11am or thereabout, it means I don't know what I'm doing. Look at a system, you will know what strategy to adopt to fit the system functioning smoothly.

Another important thing I want to address is the mode of dress one appears while in public. People address and respect you the way you dress. If I didn't achieve any other thing on my tour to the school, I believe my physical impression leaves a very big legacy to the school's growth, the entire teachers and learners.

Professionalism calls for active service.
