Happy International Women’s Day 2025!

Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women across the world.

But beyond the celebrations, today is a call to action: a reminder that there is still work to be done in bridging the gender gap in technology, innovation, and leadership.

As the Founder of Women Impact Network - WIN a Tech Leader in Nigeria, and the Community Lead for Women Techmakers (WTM), I stand firmly with every young girl and woman who dares to dream beyond limitations, who refuses to settle for less, and who envisions a future where gender is never a barrier to success.

For too long, women have been sidelined in the tech and innovation space.

Not because we lack intelligence or drive, but because access, opportunities, and societal expectations have often held us back.

But times are changing! Through Women Impact Network, WTM, and Onyinyechi Mentorship Series, we are on a mission to break these barriers and create a world where women and girls can thrive in tech, entrepreneurship, and leadership, irrespective of their background or location.

How We Are Making These Differences?

Tech Inclusion for Girls & Women – We are bringing hands-on training, mentorship, and digital skills to young girls, especially in underserved communities, so they don’t just use technology but also create and innovate with it.

Mentorship & Capacity Building – Through the Onyinyechi Mentorship Series, we are connecting aspiring female techies and entrepreneurs with seasoned professionals who guide them on their journey to success.

Bridging the Gender Gap in Innovation – We are launching initiatives that help women break into emerging tech fields like AI, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Software Development, ensuring they don’t just participate but lead.

Supporting Women in Underserved Areas – We are committed to taking tech education beyond the urban cities and into rural and underserved areas, ensuring that no girl is left behind in the digital revolution.

Advocating for Equal Opportunities – We are pushing for policies that encourage female participation in STEM fields, entrepreneurship, and leadership positions in Africa and beyond.

Our Vision: A Future Where Women Lead

Imagine a world where women build groundbreaking startups, lead the next big innovations, and shape the future of technology.

A world where no girl has to fight for a seat at the table because she is the table. This is the future we are building!

Join the Movement!

Today is not just about celebrating women; it’s about empowering them. Whether you are a young girl curious about tech, a woman looking to transition into the digital space, or an ally who believes in gender equality, there is a place for you in this movement.

Let’s connect, collaborate, and redefine what’s possible.

The future is inclusive, diverse, and powered by women.

Happy International Women’s Day 2025!

Let’s continue to break barriers, challenge norms, and inspire the next generation of women in tech and innovation!

Soft Skills - What They Are and Why They Matter.

Yesterday, I made a post asking what soft skills you will love to learn and from the responses, I discovered that some people do not really understand what Soft skills are and here I am to clarify on the subject and why they matter.

You know, when we hear the term "skills," we often think of technical abilities such as coding, data analysis, graphic design, engineering, or any other specialized expertise that defines a particular job.

But while these "hard skills" are essential, there is another set of skills that are equally, if not more, important in shaping successful careers. They are called soft skills.

What Are Soft Skills?

Soft skills refer to the personal attributes, communication abilities, and social intelligence that help you navigate your work environment, relate to others, and solve problems effectively.

Unlike technical skills that are specific to a certain job, soft skills are universal.

They apply to any role, any industry, and any stage of your career.

Think of soft skills as the “how” behind your “what.”

They determine how you interact with colleagues, how you approach challenges, and how you manage your time and energy.

While hard skills can get you in the door for a job, soft skills are often what will help you grow, maintain relationships, and advance in your career.

Examples of Soft Skills:

1. Communication: The ability to clearly and effectively convey your ideas, whether in writing, speaking, or non-verbal communication.

2. Teamwork: Working well with others, knowing how to collaborate, listen, and contribute to group goals.

3. Problem-Solving: The ability to think critically, assess situations, and come up with creative solutions to challenges.

4. Emotional Intelligence (EQ): Understanding your own emotions and the emotions of others, which helps you manage relationships and resolve conflicts.

5. Adaptability: Being open to change, learning new things, and adjusting to different environments or situations.

6. Time Management: Effectively prioritizing tasks, managing deadlines, and balancing multiple responsibilities.

7. Leadership: Inspiring and motivating others, making decisions, and guiding teams toward shared goals.

8. Conflict Resolution: Knowing how to manage disagreements in a healthy and productive way.

9. Work Ethic: Showing dedication, discipline, and reliability in your work.

10. Creativity: Thinking outside the box and coming up with innovative ideas and solutions.

Now you may ask: Why Are Soft Skills So Important?

You will agree with me that today, technical knowledge alone won’t guarantee success.

Soft skills are what make you adaptable, relatable, and a valuable asset to any team.

Here’s why soft skills matter:

~ Workplace Collaboration: No matter how talented you are in your field, most jobs require collaboration. Whether it is working on a team project, communicating with clients, or managing stakeholders, your ability to work with others effectively is key to achieving results.

~ Leadership Potential: If you aspire to grow into leadership roles, soft skills are non-negotiable. Leaders need to inspire, communicate, resolve conflicts, and foster teamwork. Without strong soft skills, leadership roles will be much harder to attain.

~ Career Progression: Studies have shown that soft skills are often the deciding factor in promotions. When companies look to fill higher positions, they seek individuals who not only know their job but can manage people, handle stress, and lead projects.

~ Adaptability in Changing Environments: The world of work is constantly changing. As new technologies emerge and industries shift, the ability to adapt to change becomes one of the most valuable traits an employee can have.

Can Soft Skills Be Developed?

Absolutely!

While some people may naturally possess strong soft skills, they can be learned and improved with practice.

Below are a few ways to develop your soft skills:

- Self-Awareness: Pay attention to how you interact with others. Are you a good listener? Do you communicate clearly? Start by being mindful of your strengths and areas for improvement.

- Seek Feedback: Ask for feedback from peers, mentors, or supervisors on how you handle certain situations. Constructive criticism can help you understand how others perceive your actions and behaviors.

- Practice: Soft skills improve with experience. Engage in more team projects, practice problem-solving in real-life scenarios, and push yourself to adapt to new challenges.

- Take Courses or Workshops: There are numerous resources, both online and offline, that offer training in communication, leadership, emotional intelligence, and other soft skills.

- Observe Role Models: Look to people you admire who possess strong soft skills, whether they are your colleagues, mentors, or leaders in your industry. Learn from their approach and apply it to your own interactions.

You see eeeeeh, Soft skills are the secret ingredient that can turn a good employee into a great one.

They are the bridge between technical ability and professional success, and they are more relevant than ever in today’s work environment.

Whether you are starting out in your career or aiming for the next level, investing in developing your soft skills will pay off in both your professional and personal life.

Thank you so much for reading through!

Have a beautiful Tuesday ahead!

I once visited my cousin, Chioma, who had just closed down her small business after struggling to keep it afloat for over a year.

She had invested her time, energy, and savings into opening a shop, but things just didn’t go as planned.

As we sat in their living room, she sighed, “Onyi, I feel like such a failure. Everyone else seems to be doing well, and here I am, back at square one. My husband will be so disappointed by me.”

Her words hit me because they reminded me of how so many of us feel when things don’t go as expected; like we are the only ones facing setbacks, while others are soaring ahead.

But the truth is, failure is part of everyone’s journey, and it often comes before success.

I looked at Chioma and said,

Do you remember how I started my first business?

I thought I had it all figured out, but it flopped within months. I poured everything into it, but the market wasn’t right, and I didn’t have the right strategies in place.

I felt crushed, too.

But guess what?

That failure taught me lessons I couldn’t have learned any other way.

It prepared me for the next opportunity.

Chioma nodded, but I could see the doubt still lingered.

So, I shared more stories, stories of famous entrepreneurs who failed several times before they hit it big.

I reminded her that every success story has chapters filled with mistakes, wrong turns, and moments of despair.

It is in those moments that we learn the most.

Failure shows us what doesn’t work, and it forces us to adapt, grow, and come back stronger.

It’s like refining gold, it has to go through fire to shine.

After a while, she smiled, a glimmer of hope returning to her eyes. “Maybe I needed this,” she said, “to rethink my approach, understand my strengths, and plan better for the future.”

Failure is not the end; it’s just a stepping stone on the path to success.

It is okay to stumble, fall, and feel like you are starting over.

What matters is that you don’t stay down.

Each setback is an opportunity to get up, dust yourself off, and keep going.

For anyone feeling like they have failed, remember that you are not alone.

Failure is not a dead end.

It is a detour that brings you closer to where you are meant to be.

Embrace it, learn from it, and use it as fuel to power your next move.

Success may not come immediately, but it will come.

Have a beautiful Monday and a Blessed week ahead.

From a disadvantaged orphan to a remarkable Accounting Academic.

Meet - Lisa Nqala, inspirational Accounting Academic, she cames from a disadvantage background full of poverty and limited resources, but through determination, perseverance and work hard, today she is a remarkable Accounting Academic.

Lisa lost her mother when she only 7 years old in 1997 and she lost her grandmother who was her guardian a year later.

In 2008, she went through the trauma again when her father got sick and passed away, and that time she had just completed her matric and was looking for a university to study further.

"After Matric, I worked at the laundry as a laundry assistant and as a domestic worker for the laundry owners in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal. It was hard and I felt hopeless, watching my peers going to varsity. I used the money that I got from my job to phone the universities and request application forms and send them back to the universities."

"I got accepted by three institutions, two for education and one for accounting so I decided to go with CPUT because I love accounting and auditing, I have always wanted to be an Auditor," said Lisa Nqala.

Against all odds, Lisa obtained a Master of Internal Auditing, a Bachelor of Technology in Internal Auditing, a National Diploma in Internal Auditing and a Certificate in Accountacy all from Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Lisa Nqala is a PhD candidate in Accounting Sciences at the University of South Africa, and a member of Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa (IIASA).

She is currently a Lecturer at Boston City Campus and Business College.

“Growing up in disadvantaged rural areas made it difficult for me to adjust to university and a big city."

“When I came to varsity, I did not even know how to use a computer. I struggled to communicate in English. I struggled with low self-esteem. Through all these things, I carried so much pain for so many years from my childhood trauma."

“It took me time to finally open up about them. The other challenge I face is that it takes so much time for my skills and knowledge to be recognised. I often have to work harder than anyone else to prove that I am capable.”

"My goal is to study further to obtain a doctoral qualification and eventually become a rated professor in accounting."

“I would also love to have a mentoring program that would cater to disadvantaged children's needs,” said Lisa Nqala.

Join us in celebrating her 💃🏾🚀👏🏿

Dear Parents,

In the past few weeks, my husband and I have been deeply immersed in taking important decisions for our 22-month-old daughter.

From choosing the right school to being intentional about her food selection, it has become clearer to me once again that parenting is far from being a passive role.

You must be constantly involved, Intentional and Mindful.

Every decision we make, no matter how small, has the potential to shape her future, and as parents, we cannot afford to take that lightly.

For instance, when it came to selecting her school, we didn’t just focus on the name or reputation. We enrolled her into a new school simply because we didn't get expected results from her creche school.

For this, we dug deeper. We looked into the school’s values, the environment they create for learning, and even went as far as researching her about potential classmates. Hahahahhahahahhaha

These might seem like little things, but they matter.

Personally, I want her to be surrounded by the right influences from an early age.

The kind of children she interacts with, the food choices she makes, and the values instilled in her all contribute to the foundation she’s building as she grows.

As parents, we need to realize that our future is closely tied to our children’s future. I know you may want to argue this but that's fact.

Their success, well-being, and happiness reflect the decisions we make for them today.

It is so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and leave their development to chance, but that’s not a luxury we can afford.

We must be intentional in guiding their growth, nurturing their talents, and surrounding them with the right influences of course, if they win, we WIN.

Okay, take, for example, the choices we make about their education.

Education is not just about getting them into any school; it is about finding the right place that will nurture their curiosity, challenge their thinking, and help them grow into well-rounded individuals.

Few weeks ago, I was pained that a father whose children are in various classes in primary school do not know his Children's exact classes not to talk of the names his kids bear in school.

Pathetic!

We must always ask ourselves: Are we making sure these children are in the environments that promote learning, empathy, and respect for others?

Are we exposing them to the right kind of values that will shape their character as they mature?

This and many other questions!

I know the economy is bad but then, we must take charge of various areas of their lives.

What we feed them today directly impacts their development and health tomorrow. Some of our parents made this mistake and I wouldn't want us to make the same mistake on our children.

You know, it is easier to overlook these things, but being intentional about their diet sets them up for a healthier life.

The same goes for teaching them values like discipline, hard work, and respect from a young age.

You may choose to neglect these things but even the Bible advises use to train up a child in the way he should go.

Every decision, no matter how small, plays a role in shaping the adults they will become.

The habits they form, the friends they keep, and the lessons they learn all begin at this stage.

If we want to see our children grow into successful, responsible adults, we need to start building that foundation now.

At the end of the day, our children are our legacy.

The future we envision for ourselves is tightly connected to the future we help build for them.

As you make choices for your children, whether it is about school, friendships, food, or values, remember that you are not just raising them for today, you are shaping their tomorrow.

And their tomorrow is your future as well.

Be intentional about your children's upbringing!

Guide them with wisdom.

Try as much as you can to secure a better future for yourselves through the future you build for your children today.

Happy Sunday! Shalom!

A few days ago, I visited a friend of mine. We hadn’t seen each other in a while, and so I stopped by her house to say hi to her new baby.

We sat down, and her mother served me that post natal foods nah, and we began to gist as usual.

She had always wanted to be different, always dreamed big as long as I can remember.

We used to talk about her owning her a business, one that would impact lives in a meaningful way.

But like most of us, life had its way of making her dreams seem distant.

She had bills to pay, a family to take care of, and the pressure of daily life weighed on her heavily.

The dream was still there, but it seemed too big, too far away.

She told me that an opportunity presented itself as they relocated to Ngozika Estate and an opportunity and space presented itself just few months into her pregnancy.

Without any other delay, she started from her small kitchen, making products and selling them to close friends and family.

It wasn’t glamorous, but it was a start. She was all smiles as she shared the story from the dept of her heart.

As she shared her story, she smiled, saying, “Onyi, if I had waited for everything to be perfect, I’d still be waiting.

You see eeh, sometimes, all you need to do is take that first step, no matter how small.

That first step opened doors she never even imagined.

What started as a small side hustle grew slowly, bit by bit.

She reinvested whatever little profit she made into the business, learning new things along the way, and connecting with more people who believed in her vision.

Today, her business isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving.

She’s gone from her kitchen to owning her own space, with a loyal customer base that trusts the products she creates. All thanks to her supportive husband.

Her story reminded me of a powerful lesson: so many of us are waiting for the “right time” to begin.

We think we need everything in place before we can take that leap, but the truth is, the perfect time may never come.

You just have to start with what you have, where you are, and let the process unfold.

Dreaming big is important, but starting small is often where the magic happens.

It is in those humble beginnings that you learn the most, grow the most, and build the foundation for something greater.

My friend’s story is proof that you don’t need everything figured out to get started, you just need the courage to take that first step.

Whether your dream is to start a business, launch a project, or pursue a new career, remember this: you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.

Just start, and let your small beginnings lead you to something bigger than you ever imagined.

Have a beautiful Morning and a great day ahead!
