Why do youths engage in Cyber crime?

However, you use these sites at your own risk – and at the risk of exposing your personal information to the world. Nothing online is private. Even the most ironclad privacy setting doesn’t change the fact that whatever you post online – or send through a “secure” chat message – can be copied and shared with others.

Social Networking: How Exposed Is Your Life Online?
Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites have transformed the way millions of people connect with each other and share information. They have emerged as a powerful new medium – and an important potential data source for advertisers. New Jersey’s State government uses Facebook and Twitter to communicate with the public, and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs maintains its own page.
Facebook has more than 955 million active users; Twitter has more than 500 million active users; Google+ has 250 million registered users; LinkedIn has more than 175 million registered users; and MySpace reported 25 million unique U.S. visitors in June 2012.

Identity theft is considered the fastest-growing financial crime. It occurs when a thief assumes the victim’s identity in order to apply for credit cards, loans or other benefits, in the victim’s name, or uses this information to access your existing accounts. The thief will accumulate massive debt or deplete your current assets and then move on to another stolen identity. The victim, meanwhile, may end up thousands of dollars in debt, with a ruined credit history or with an empty bank account.

“Cyber-security” refers to the protection of everything that is potentially exposed to the Internet: our
computers, smart phones and other devices; our personal information; our privacy; and our children.
The Internet is an amazingly useful and versatile tool that has become indispensable for work,
education, personal entertainment, and staying connected with family and friends. Use it responsibly,
while taking care to protect yourself and your data, and you will continue to find it a valuable resource.

obtain a student loan, or engage in other activities that depend on the use of your own good name.
Your identity might be stolen through phishing, in which criminals trick victims into handing
over their personal information such as online passwords, Social Security or credit card
numbers. It might be done by invading your computer with spyware that reads your personal
information, or it may be as easy as stealing your wallet

Cyber Security.
Cybersecurity involves protecting information and systems from major cyber threats, such as cyber terrorism, cyber warfare, and cyber espionage. In their most disruptive form, cyber threats take aim at secret, political, military, or infrastructural assets of a nation, or its people. Cybersecurity is therefore a critical part of any governments’ security strategy. The U.S. federal government for example, has allotted over $13 billion annually to cybersecurity since late 2010.
Cyber Terrorism

Cyber terrorism is the disruptive use of information technology by terrorist groups to further their ideological or political agenda. This takes the form of attacks on networks, computer systems, and telecommunication infrastructures. For example, in response to the removal of a Russian WWII memorial in 2007, Estonia was hit with a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that knocked almost all ministry networks and two major bank networks offline. The rise in such cyber terrorism attacks is measureable: in the U.S., head of Military Cyber Command Keith B. Alexander stated that cyber attacks on facilities classified as critical infrastructure in the United States have increased 17-fold since 2009.
Cyber Warfare

Cyber warfare involves nation-states using information technology to pe*****te another nation’s networks to cause damage or disruption. In the US and many other nation-states, cyber warfare has been acknowledged as the fifth domain of warfare (following land, sea, air, and space). Cyber warfare attacks are primarily executed by hackers who are well trained in exploiting the intricacies of computer networks and operate under the auspices and support of the nation-states. Rather than “shutting down” a target’s key networks, a cyber warfare attack may intrude networks for the purpose of compromising valuable data, degrading communications, impairing infrastructural services such as transportation and medical services, or interrupting commerce. For example, in the 2008 South Ossetia war, Russia’s initial attacks on Georgian soil were preceded by a synchronized cyber attack that crippled Georgian government websites.
Cyber Espionage

Cyber espionage is the practice of using information technology to obtain secret information without permission from its owners or holders. Cyber espionage is most often used to gain strategic, economic, political, or military advantage. It is conducted through the use of cracking techniques and malware. In the US, the Office of the National CounterIntellegence Executive released a report in 2011 officially acknowledging the legitimate threat of cyber espionage and its potential to damage the United States’ strategic economic advantage. In a subsequent opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, former Director of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff elaborated on the economic impact of China’s cyber espionage of intellectual property, which he likens to the “source code” of today’s advanced economies. Through the utilization of its massive and inexpensive workforce, China has cheaply and efficiently driven a number of these ideas directly into production. As the fruits of costly investments in research and development from the hosting nation-states, the theft of these innovations is an immense strategic and economic loss to the targets.

With cyber threats in a state of rapid and continuous evolution, keeping pace in cybersecurity strategy and operations is a major challenge to governments. Cybersecurity is a serious concern to private enterprise as well, given the threat to intellectual property and privately-held critical infrastructure. Advisory organizations such as The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have recently updated guidelines to promote a more proactive and adaptive approach that prescribes continuous monitoring and real-time assessments. These guidelines are expatiated on in the NIST 800 and ISO 27002 publications.

Hacking Facebook accounts is one of the trending topics in the Internet. Many people become victim of Facebook hacking, in that more than half of them aren’t able to recover their hacked account due to lack of awareness of recovery techniques. These recovery options will help you recover your account easily.
Recover Hacked Facebook Account - Forgot Password

Let me break down the possibilities of hacked Facebook accounts and its recovery techniques.
1. Forgot Password or Password Changed
This is the most common case of recovering hacked Facebook account where the password has been changed but your Facebook account still have your associated email address or mobile number.

Go to Facebook Forgot Password option
Enter your email or mobile number or username or name in the textbox and click search. Generally name is not recommended since there may be more than one person with the same name. Username is unique Facebook identity, that you may find in your profile URL. Example : https://www.facebook.com/zuck. Here zuck is the username of Mark Zuckerberg.
You should see your profile with recovery email address and mobile number if any. Select mobile number or email address that you can access right now and then click Continue.
Check your mailbox if you choose email / mobile inbox if you choose mobile number to get the recovery code. Enter the recovery code to continue.
That’s all. Set your new password and get back to your Facebook account.

2. Password Changed & No Access to Associated Email
In this case hacker changed your Facebook password and you lost or forgot password of your email resulting you have no access to Facebook associated email.

Go to Facebook Forgot Password option
Enter your email or mobile number or username or name in the textbox and click search.
Click “No longer have access to these?” at the bottom of the reset password dialog box. Facebook Recovery Options
You will be directed to extended recovery options. It may vary for different Facebook accounts
Security Question : This option is unavailable for new Facebook accounts but old Facebook users can make use of it. You can answer this question to proceed to set new password if it is listed as one of the extended recovery options.
Trusted Contacts : You can use this option only if you have already choosen trusted contacts.
Enter a new email address or phone that you know you can access and click Continue.

You’ll see a set of instructions that includes a URL. The URL contains a special security code that only your trusted contacts can access. Call your friends and give them the URL so that they can open the link and give the security code to you.
Use the security codes from your trusted contacts to access your account.

3. Password & Associated Email Address Changed
Here the hacker changed your password as well as your associated email address. This case is somewhat hard to recover since the hacker blocked a way to recover. We have two options in this case. You should either have access to mobile number or old email address.
Recover using Mobile Number

Go to Facebook Forgot Password option

Check your mobile inbox for recovery code and enter the recover code in the given text box.
That’s all. Set your new password of your Facebook account.
Recover using Email Change Notification
This method can be applied only if you try in few days after your account was hacked.
Login to your email account (email that you have given in Facebook) and search for emails from Facebook about the change of email address. Usually that email subject would be “Facebook primary email changed to”.
Click “If you didn’t do this, please secure your account.” link in that email. You will be prompted to “Secure your account“, click continue to proceed In next step there might be variety of recovery options given depending upon your account and security.
