COMPONENTS OF MENTAL TOUGHNESS

i. Challenge
ii. Control
iii. Commitment
iv. Confidence

The four Cs.

CHALLENGE: Every academic challenges should be seen as an opportunity to explore and realise ones potential other yielding to it.

CONTROL: Have a firm believe that the influence and authority to overcome the challenges are inherent and natural.

COMMITMENT: Exercise the influence by being bounded in intellectual sincerity and staying focus on seeing through to completion the challenges.

CONFIDENCE: Trust in this your inherent ability to overcome the challenge.

One of my ex-students in 2017 narrated his ordeal in physics to me during one of my one on one session with students. Prior to then, his performance in the subject was far below average as a result he had a rethink on his career as a would be medical Doctor.
During the session I encouraged him to go back and practise the four Cs of academic mental toughness.
After sometimes, we met again and the narrative changed.
He saw his inability to comprehend the subject as an opportunity (CHALLENGE) to explore it. Trusting in his abilities to overcome the challenges(CONFIDENCE) he became more focused than ever in his studies, became more intentional and took every element of class and personal study serious(COMMITMENT). Gradually, he started picking up and believed
he can influence and overturn the situation with more persistence(CONTROL).
Today he is a medical biochemistry student of University of Benin.
Encourage a student today to practise the four Cs of academic mental toughness and see the result.

"Success is not final and failure is not fatal but it is the mental courage (Toughness) that counts"
WINSTON CHURCHILL.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

Mental toughness could simply be defined as an unyielding,a resilient and sturdy mindset that is resistance to failure or any form of demoralizing and demeaning thoughts or mental activities.
It is expedient that every learner must imbibe the act of being mentally tough.
This singular characteristic helps a learner understand that even if it appears that he is not comprehending while studying he must not give up or yield rather continue to push until a point when he starts comprehending.
Most students fall along the line because they couldn't understand at the first attempt what they read, some give a maximum three trails and give up.
Academic excellence is obtained through hardwork and commitment and this can be attained by being mentally tough.
In one of my interviews with student, a girl narrated how she gave up on mathematics because she doesn't understand when taught and forgets even the little she seems to understand. Another said when she attempts a question three times and don't get the answer she gives up.
All these is because they yield easily when studying and as such needs to be mentally tough.
It comes with a conscious effort and determination, and we teachers/tutors are charged with the responsibilities of instilling this virtue in the student.

Stay tuned for the components, features and ways of instilling mental toughness in students for optimum performance.

DECLINING STANDARD OF EDUCATION

A school is an institution dedicated to teaching and learning.
Overtime, the output of students has declined greatly and school administrators are faced with the inappropriate task of pushing students up the ladder either due to parents persuasion or on intent.
The abysmal performance of students has lead to a question of who/what is responsible?
Teachers/Students/Parents/School authorities?everyone seeks to find a solution.
I had a private session with some students on why their performance is woeful and series of repeated excuses came up and I realised that it's a viscous circle that if not addressed with caution and utmost urgency it will permanently decay the education sector.
The psychology of the students have greatly been tainted and there lies the greater problem(root).
I was a guest speaker at a student seminar and wasn't surprise to hear them chant "laslas, school na scam", that is a psychology problem that has lead to our children not devoting time to study anymore or even pay astute attention when in class.
Gone are the days when academic excellence was the watchword for students. Why study when schools inadvertently support the lackadaisical attitude of the students by promoting when it's not merited and worst of all aiding them in external exams without worries of the future.
An engineering graduate (2.1) was posted to a secondary for service and was asked to teach maths and physics but he instead opted to teach social studies. Why? Your guess is as good as mine, he couldn't teach what he doesn't know.
There is a clarion call to tackle this menace in the education sector so as to produce worthy professionals whose services will be to improve standard of living and save lives instead of destroying it.
Stay tuned as we work together to tackle the plagues in our academic sector in other to restore excellence.
Remain blessed.
