How to Discover If Your Ward Is Not In School

As a career specialist, I have found my way into communities of students, parents, alumni, guardians and sponsors and have often come across some vital information which I believe should be handled differently.

Some of the things I was privileged to know are cases of students who have been out of school but still collecting fees from the parents. Some were out of school by voluntarily distancing themselves from classes and do not have results for sometime now.

Others were Withdrawn for Academic Failure (WAF), suspended for gross misconduct, malpractices, etc. Some used their school fees and could not do their registration and just decided to remain in their apartment in school and be receiving payment like retirees. Lols.

But when these cases comes to my attention, they are often not easy to attend to because you want to handle matters to ensure they do not degenerate or escalate into something more difficult. So, as a parent, sponsor or guardian, how do you investigate or operate with the sole purpose of finding out if your ward/student whom you are sending fees to is actually in school?

Believe me, some parents that will act on this will actually get a shocker of their life. So, let us give some tips you can use to follow up your students in school because they are actually investments and anything that will tamper with such investment should be quickly addressed.

So below are some tips that will help you investigate, address and give further support to your wards in school.

See result for one level before you pay school fees for the next level: Just imagine that you gave a contractor money to build a house for you to window level. Won't you check if that one has been done before you pay another money to complete the house? So, why have you paid school fees for 100 level, 200 level and so on and even one level result you have not seen? Why? Don't you think you contributed to any lapses you may discover? Please ask for result for the last school fees you paid before paying for the next school fees. Clause: Result for previous session may not be available as at the time the next school fees will be required because of hostel application in Niger Delta University. But if you live outside school campus, then you have the leverage of seeing your results before paying the next fees. But hostellers, for the purpose of getting accommodation quickly may need to pay fees ahead of results.
You must request for all school portal login details: So, your son sent you his results and your body is doing you gulugulugulu, that the results looks like it is doctored. Yes o daddy. That your body language is correct. That results came from a cafe not from VC. Please tell him to send you the website to check the results and the login so that you can login yourself, confirm and print it out. For parents who are not internet savvy, get a cafe man within the university (like the A & U Ng Smart Office) and make them your trustee. Send them the login to confirm for you if you can't do it yourself. As a parent, access to the results are under your control because "he who plays the piper determine the tune of the dance". So, whatever happens is your sole decision to make. Unless, as my mother rightly said, "since your body dom reach to take look mirror so, go therefore and pay your school fees yourself".
Again, if you are not financially responsible for your ward's presence in school, you have not right to his/her results. Make you no go receive insults when you no plan for. Please avoid problems. Unless your absence in the school finances are a result of scholarship or a third party taking up the fees on your behalf.
Visit the Head Of Department (HOD): The results alone is the sole determinant to know that your investment is working fine or not. But you see that HOD so? As him open him record, come tell you say none of the letters in the name you gave to him are in his record, then make you just know say e dom be for you be that. The the boy has been receiving gratuity from you since all in the name of admission. So, if you have time, visit the HOD if at all you no dey understand your ward. Ask the HOD if truly your ward is in his department. When you reach the school, ask anyone where such Department is located. They will direct you.
Pay An Unscheduled Visit: It is not out of place to pay an unscheduled visit to your student in school. Call him one day and ask about him. Tell him that you are in one bar nearby cooling off. Him go shock! Lols. Noooooo! Insstead of a bar, just go to his door front and knock and wait for the looks on his face when he/she sees you. It will look like he saw a ghost. Like, is this playing? Such a visit will help you know if your student keeps a boy or girl in the house. You will also know if he smokes or keep bad company. For a parent paying full rent to avoid roommate, you will also know if someone is shharing the room with your ward in school.
Connect With His Friends (the tood ones and maybe the enemies who are ready to dig up past(Mummy and daddy need to know everything now!)): Whenever you are around, try to be close to his friends who are serious with studies, the religious ones, the night class types of friends. Also try to reach friends he//she is quarreling with. Gossip with them and put them to talk always. If possible, send 2k urgently often and I promise you, them go open him yanch for you. Even if your pikin na hook up, you go get regular updates. They are even ready to tell her that one customer/client dey one hotel dey wait her. Only to meet daddy for hotel. Villagge meeting straight. Lols. Eyes go tell.
Confirm All School Fees Receipts: Why did I even forget to put this in number 1? Even before thinking of confirming results, the school fees you sent, did you ask of receipts? If he sent it to you, did you confirm it? Oh sorrow! These children sabi make person look like fo!ol o Oteguolo! So o, I got set to send you to school only for you to turn around to send me fake school fees receipt? Have you even thought of how I feel? This is just the sad reality. Doctored documents are a regular stuff amongst sttudents. In 2018, I saw an A & U Ng year one clearance list held by a customer who came to do clearance. The appearance looks like my office document but the arrangement looks strange. I just kept looking and staring until I found that the document was a retyped list. The figures were tampered at every stage. These increased figures is to get small profits for going to school. Painful!

Should You Apply a Capital Punishment on a University Student who Committed a Capital Offence?

This topic is one that has been bothering me for a while with little time to attend to the material. I have to set aside all tasks in my desk to tackle this issue being an important discussion in my list.

So, as captured in the topic, should a parent/sponsor administer a capital punishment on a student who committed a capital offence?

Lets start with the phrase "capital offence" here. By capital offence, I mean a wrongdoing by the student that is so costly. This includes squandering of school fees (with some squandering from 100 level up till final year school fees); a student who is no longer in school but keeps collecting school fees; a dependant student who gets impregnated or inpregnates a lady; engaging in serious crimes that leads to jail terms, etc.

Capital punishment in this report refers to asking a student to stop schooling due to the offence so committed. Or distancing oneself from sponsorship or any other punishment that could affect the student in the long run.

So, lets go back to the question. When your student commit a serious offence, should you apply a capital punishment? Like remove your hand from his sponsorship and tell him to find his way?

Let me put it in my mother's language, "since your body is now big enough to look mirror so, you will now start taking care of yourself". Should this be the permanent decision on a student who committed a capital offence?

Well, before you take a capital decision on a student who committed a capital offence, kindly note the following:

The mindset you have as at the time of the incident, the anger and the emotional damage you will pass through upon hearing what your student did will later die down.
If you apply a capital punishment and your student permanently stopped school, there may be regrets in years to come.
The financial level you are now that is necessitating your decision may have improved over time and you may feel that you should have allowed him/her to continue studies.
Most of the ward's actions are caused by pressing factors. For instance, some students only receive school fees from their parents. Without feeding and other expenses sent to them, they use their fees to cover up.
Assumptions
There are numerous students who are out of school now (due to WAF, suspension, etc.) but they are not reporting to their parents due to how their parents will handle the matter.

Some students have used up their fees from 100 level till their current level. Some used only 100 level. Used year two fees to cover up for year three and used year four fees to cover up for year three. Now in final year, they are now scampering for how to meet up to pay the last fees.

Most parents do not check up on their wards academic activities like participation in classes, results, etc. Their participation ends with payment of fees, feeding, etc. So when something goes wrong, they are hardly aware.

Applying Punishment for Students' Capital Offence

As a career expert, it is not in my place to tell a sponsor what type of punishment to apply on a student who errs. However, it is imperative to share university knowledge and issues bothering on expertise with a sponsor in this situation to aid a better decision making.

It is a general knowledge that decision made in haste and anger are often flawed or most times regretted. Consequently, it is important to calm nerves and allow a little time to pass (if there is time) before making a decision. Lets discuss the 4 items listed above before we move on.

1. The mindset you have as at the time of the incident, the anger and the emotional damage you will pass through upon hearing what your student did will later die down. No matter how you feel now, if you allow time to pass, you will surely calm down and your decision will be better. It is the decision that you took when you are calm that is often the best decision because you have given issues a careful and thorough thoughts.

2. If you apply a capital punishment and your student permanently stopped school, there may be regrets in years to come. What if you stopped your ward's education and is doing badly later in life when the other siblings are graduates and doing well, won't you feel guilty? Maybe by then, he is living a decent life; he must have regretted his actions and changed for good. But unfortunately, his education has been stopped.

3. The financial level you are now that is necessitating your decision may have improved over time and you may feel that you should have allowed him/her to continue studies. If you are a struggling sponsor and your ward squandered his/her fees, of course your first response would be to recall him/her permanently from school. But what if your finances has increased over the years? Will you still maintain the same position?

4. Most of the ward's actions are caused by pressing factors. For instance, some students only receive school fees from their parents. Without feeding and other expenses sent to them, they use their fees to cover up. Additionally, school expenses are very plenty. Couple with the current increase in cost of goods and services, some students may soon consider droppingo out. So, with such level of expenses, if the money being sent is not enough, the school fees might go down.

Conclusion

Implementing a capital punishment on a student who committed a capital offence should be as a result of proper consultation, understanding and carefulness. This is to avoid making a decision that will negatively influence a student's future life in haste as such decision may later be regretted.

In the heat of the moment, the student can be recalled home while proper actions and other non-capital disciplinary action is taken against him. In a case of a student who squandered his fees on betting, the parent reported to the whole community and he received a whole community beating while his education continues. Other parents may utilized more civilized actions against their erring wards.
Which ever road you take, always put the student's future in mind. Also remember that they are your investments for the future. Persons that will be your foundations at old age. Hence, a decision against them must be properly thought out.
