Introduction to World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW)

*Theme:* _“Future‑Proofing Antimicrobial Stewardship: Innovation, Impact & Action”_

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign celebrated every year from 18th to 24th November. It was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to increase awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to encourage the responsible use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines.

The purpose of the week is to help people understand:

What antimicrobial resistance is

How misuse and overuse of antimicrobials worsen resistance

How students, health workers, and the public can take action

The importance of protecting the effectiveness of medicines that fight infections

For NAMS SOUTHERN REGION: this week gives us an opportunity to:

Educate our student and the region.

Promote microbiology knowledge

Inspire responsible health practices

Showcase our role as future scientists and health advocates

Antimicrobialogenesis

Pronunciation: an-tee-my-croh-bee-oh-LOH-jeh-nes-sis

Meaning:
The origin or creation of antimicrobial substances — compounds that kill or stop the growth of microorganisms.

🔹 Etymology (Word Origin):

Anti- → against

Microbial → relating to microorganisms (tiny living organisms like bacteria, fungi, etc.)

-genesis → origin, formation, or creation

Put together:
➡️ Antimicrobialogenesis literally means the creation or formation of things that act against microbes.

🔹 Examples:

1. The discovery of penicillin marked a new era in antimicrobialogenesis.

2. Scientists study antimicrobialogenesis to understand how natural organisms produce antibiotic compounds.

3. The field of synthetic antimicrobialogenesis focuses on designing new drugs in the lab.

🔹 Conclusion:
Antimicrobialogenesis is the process or study of how antimicrobial substances are formed or created—either by living organisms (like bacteria and fungi) or through laboratory synthesis. Understanding antimicrobialogenesis is very important in Microbiology because it helps researchers develop new antibiotics and treatments to fight harmful microorganisms and combat antibiotic resistance.

Did you know?

Some microorganisms don’t just live on land or in water—they float in the air! These are called Aeroplankton or Bioaerosols. They include bacteria, viruses, and fungal spores. While many are harmless, others can cause infections or trigger allergies.

Now you know! Stay aware, stay healthy.

*🚨 CLARIFICATION: JAMB HAS NOT BEEN SCRAPPED*

The recent ministry of education press release is not about scrapping JAMB — rather, it’s aimed at creating more opportunities for students to gain admission.

Key highlights include:

✅ Candidates with D7 in Mathematics can now apply for non-science courses
✅ Candidates with D7 in English can apply for science-related courses
✅ Polytechnics and Colleges of Education may accept 4 O’Level credits instead of 5

This update is meant to make admission more inclusive, not to cancel JAMB.✅️✅️✅️
