1 THING EVERY TEACHER MUST KNOW.

1. As a teacher, it is important to know where you belong: know your specialty.

Decide early what kind of teacher you want to be: there are options to choose from:
• -Early Years
• -Primary
• -Secondary
• -Subject specialist.
Not every age group is for you: not every age group is your strength.

Find out where you belong early enough and focus. Build the required skills for that age group or for that subject. Build expertise in one area before moving to another. Take your career in your own hands and stop being tossed around by the 'available class' in a school. Don't work in nursery 1 today and SS3 tomorrow: you won't develop competence that way. Spend years understanding a particular class or class group before moving.

If you choose nursery, then develop yourself in the nursery area so well that even if you are woken up in the middle of the night to teach a 2 year old, you know exactly what to do. Be a walking Nursery curriculum. If you choose any other age group, do the same.

Use this period of lockdown to map out and strategise on where you actually want to be when school resumes.
