MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (MAN). YEAR 2022 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MATHEMATICS (Pi DAY): MATHEMATICS UNITES, IN THE ERA OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC BY WHESU ELIJAH MAUTIN

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). It is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format which incidentally are the first three significant digits of π (3.14). It is a day to celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π).

The Pi Day was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw. UNESCO proclaimed March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics (Pi Day) on the 40th session of the General Conference on November 26, 2019.

It is celebrated in countries that follow the date format. Alternative dates for the celebration include July 22 (22/7, an approximation of π) and June 28 (6.28, an approximation of 2π or tau).

MATHEMATICS UNITES:
Every year a new theme is announced to flavor the celebration, spark creativity and bring light to connections between mathematics and all sorts of fields, concepts and ideas.

The theme for the 2022 International Day of Mathematics is Mathematics Unites. It was proposed by Yuliya Nesterova, a graduate student from the University of Ottawa in Canada. She explains:

“Mathematics unites, to signal that it is a common language we all have and a common subject with which to find one another.”

MATHEMATICS UNITES, IN THE ERA OF COVIF-19 PANDEMIC is the sub topic chosen to further explain or rather demonstrate the impact of mathematics in uniting people in this era of Covid-19 pandemic.

Across the world, the crisis from the Covid-19 pandemic is inescapable. Both learners and educators suffered tremendous disruptions, pains, and fears. The physical suffering, the isolation, and the compelling demands to care for others in new ways have been real and deep. It strongly upsets us, it disturbs our existence, and unites or divides us in different ways. Our responsibilities as mathematics educators in such a time of crisis became challenging as we still have to connect with the learners.

While we take time to care for each other, ourselves, and others, as scholars it is also our responsibility in a time of crisis to interpret the changing world and develop appropriate research agendas.

The world is becoming increasingly interconnected due to advanced technologies for the movement of information, people, and goods. The teaching and learning of mathematics (in elementary, secondary, and tertiary contexts) became the connecting factor across all subjects and mindfulness.

Take Note:
👉 Mathematics unites and so, whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny mathematics is the order of the world and without it, we wouldn’t be able to make much sense of it at all.

👉 Mathematics inspires us to educate ourselves and so Mathematics Day is all about celebrating and recognizing the brilliant mathematician whose hard work and passion helped in becoming most recognized mathematicians today regardless of the bleak circumstances.

👉 Practically every career uses math.
Obviously, mathematicians and scientists, factory workers and lots more rely on mathematical principles to do the most basic aspects of their work.

In conclusion, Mathematics at this present point in time is seen as a subject that Unites both learners and educators for the purpose of not just loving but also living purposefully.

Here is wishing us all a happy Pi Day!

FROM THE DESK OF COMRADE AKINTOYE HASSAN, CHAIRMAN, NUT LAGOS STATE WING

DISCLAIMER:

The attention of the State Chairman, NUT LAGOS has been drawn to a message which is purportedly being spread by NUT PRESS CREW, giving the criteria of nomination for duty post of vice principals from TESCOMS.

The FAKE NEWS has unfortunately been spread on some platforms without verification. For the avoidance of doubt, it must be stated that NUT LAGOS STATE WING does NOT have any crew designated as its PRESS CREW as at today. Adequate consultation has been made by NUT and it is confirmed that such news NEVER emanated from TESCOMS.

Therefore, all concerned are hereby advised to DISREGARD the content of the fake directive as the work of mischief makers.

Invariably, it stands to reason that those behind the so-called directive are just out to cause mischief by spreading fake information, disguising themselves as NUT OFFICIALS. The perpetrators of this entangling act are out to blackmail, ridicule the establishment of TESCOMS and cause disarray between the two bodies (NUT& TESCOMS) who has been working together harmoniously to create an enabling environment for all teachers across the state

TIME
-----
One reason GOD created TIME is for us to see where to Bury our MISTAKES, FAILURES, and SUCCESSES of yesterday so that we can have an unencumbered tomorrow

So many people dwell in the past, but what matter is your focus for a better tomorrow

Take off your eyes off yesterday. It is unsafe to drive in the express way in a reverse gear.

Be positive, tomorrow will be well!!!

TO ALLAH WE BELONG, TO HIM WE RETURN Akande Odunuga 😪19/11/2021....😪
ACCOUNTANT, Nut Lagos Akande Odunuga
----------------------------------------------------------------
We are still much saddened to announce the demise of a dogged and highly dependable comrade. It's few days past and we are yet to forget in a hurry how you played a major role in the publication of the first edition of De Beacons magazine.

Our dear Soludo, you'll forever be in our heart because you were a great fan who cherished and loved what we do. You talked and walked your feelings in a pretty much commendable manner. How then could we erase the memories of your passionate deeds🥲 as far as our success is concerned?

Words can't really express how painful it is to live with the believe that such a great lover of goodness is no longer on this space.

Who are we to question God? The giver and taker of life...

You have actually lived so well and laid unforgettable footprints behind.

Our heartiest wish and prayer for you is that the most High continue to light your path and give your loved ones the fortitude to bear this huge loss. Amen

DIABETES

There isn't a cure for diabetes yet, although there are promising discoveries, none of these have shown to be of practical use at the moment. What this means is that diabetes is required to be closely controlled and managed.

HOW IS DIABETES MANAGED?

Keep your blood glucose levels as near to normal as possible by following a diet plan, taking prescribed medication and increasing your activity level.

Maintain your blood cholesterol (HDL and LDL levels) and triglyceride levels as near the normal ranges as possible.

Control your blood pressure.

HOW IS DIABETES TREATED AND CONTROLLED?

Controlling blood sugar (glucose) levels is the major goal of diabetes treatment, in order to prevent complications of the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is managed with insulin as well as dietary changes and exercise.
Type 2 diabetes may be managed with non-insulin medications, insulin, weight reduction, or dietary changes.

Good blood sugar control is essential to prevent long term complications of diabetes. Eating a healthy diet and increasing the level of physical activity should be the first steps in the management of newly diagnosed people with diabetes, and have to be maintained.
