FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, OKO SETS NEW BENCHMARK WITH PEACEFUL, CREDIBLE ONLINE SUG ELECTION
Federal Polytechnic, Oko, has recorded another historic achievement with the successful conduct of a peaceful, transparent, free, fair, and credible online Students' Union Government (SUG) election, further reinforcing its reputation as a forward-looking institution committed to innovation, accountability, and democratic governance.
The election, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, witnessed impressive student participation through a secure online voting platform and was monitored by independent student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council (NANS JCC), and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS).
The Chairman of NANS JCC, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Ifeanyichukwu Chukwuemeke Chukwuemerie, who monitored the election, commended the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, for introducing the online voting system. He described the exercise as one of the freest, most transparent, and most credible student elections ever conducted in any Nigerian tertiary institution.
According to him, the adoption of technology has significantly enhanced the credibility of the electoral process while eliminating many of the challenges traditionally associated with campus elections.
Also speaking after the exercise, the Vice President-elect of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), Rotractor Comrade Umuzurola Chukwuebuka C., applauded the peaceful conduct of the election, describing it as free, credible, and well-organized.
In his words, "This is one of the best online elections I have witnessed since I began monitoring student elections." He praised the Rector and her Management Team for providing an enabling environment for a transparent electoral process and commended the Dean of Students' Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, for his commitment to ensuring a seamless voting exercise.
In separate interviews, the outgoing SUG President, Giant Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, and the outgoing Vice President, Comrade Nweke Kosarachukwu MaryJane, expressed appreciation to the Rector, describing her as "the Mother of the Polytechnic" whose administration has consistently placed students' welfare at the centre of governance. They urged the newly elected executives to work closely with the Management in advancing the interests of the student community. They also described the online voting system as an excellent innovation that guarantees transparency, saves time, and inspires confidence in the electoral process.
The newly elected SUG President, Giant Comrade Egbobe Chinonso Christian of the Department of Mass Communication, and the newly elected Vice President, Comrade Eze Bibian Chinenye, thanked the students for the confidence reposed in them. They equally expressed profound appreciation to the Management of the Polytechnic, led by Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, for providing a level playing field for all contestants.
They described the Rector as a visionary, transformational, and student-centred administrator whose commitment to excellence continues to position Federal Polytechnic, Oko, as one of Nigeria's leading institutions. They pledged to work in harmony with the Management, promote unity among students, and pursue initiatives that will enhance students' welfare and contribute to the continued growth of the Polytechnic.
The presidential election was keenly contested, with the winner emerging victorious by a narrow margin of only two votes over the closest challenger, a development that further demonstrated the competitiveness, transparency, and integrity of the electoral process.
The successful conduct of the online election marks another milestone under the administration of Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie and reflects her Twelve-Point Agenda and the Polytechnic's commitment to leveraging technology in strengthening institutional governance, promoting peaceful coexistence, and deepening democratic participation among students.
