Episode 3: Mama’s Needle and Tunde’s Tears

Tunde walked home slowly that afternoon, avoiding his classmates and hiding the badly torn shirt with his school bag.
For the first time in a long while, he did not play football after school.

The laughter from the assembly ground kept echoing in his head.
As he entered the house, his mother looked at him quietly.
One look at the shirt and she understood everything.
She said nothing at first.
She simply brought out her small sewing box, sat on the wooden chair, and began preparing a needle and thread.

Tunde stood there silently, unable to look her in the face.
After a while, he finally spoke in a trembling voice:
“Mama… I’m sorry.”
His mother smiled gently.
“My son, life always warns us before trouble comes.”
Tunde felt tears gather in his eyes.
“I thought the tear was too small to matter.”
His mother held up the shirt.
The damage was now so bad that she had to patch another piece of cloth inside it.
“Look at this now,” she said softly.
“If you had allowed me to stitch it the first day, it would have taken just five minutes.”
Tunde lowered his head in shame.

That evening, as his mother carefully repaired the uniform under the lantern light, Tunde sat beside her quietly, learning a lesson he would never forget.
The next Monday, he wore the neatly repaired shirt back to school.
And when some students tried to laugh again, he surprised everyone with his response.
He smiled and said:
“I have learned my lesson early in life… because a stitch in time saves nine.”

THE END.

Episode 2: The Day of Embarrassment

Friday morning finally came — the day the principal would inspect all students before the inter-house sports competition.
Tunde woke up late.
In a hurry, he grabbed the same torn shirt without checking it properly.
As he entered the classroom, his best friend Chike stared at him in shock.
“Tunde… your shirt has torn badly!”
Tunde looked down.

What started as a tiny tear had now spread almost across the side of the shirt. Part of his singlet was showing clearly.
His heart skipped.
Before he could hide it, the class prefect shouted:
“Everybody outside for inspection!”
Tunde tried standing at the back of the line, praying nobody would notice.
But fate had other plans.
The principal stopped right in front of him.
He adjusted his glasses slowly and frowned.
“Young man, why is your uniform looking like this?”
The whole assembly became silent.
Some students giggled.
Others whispered.

Tunde wished the ground would open and swallow him.
With shaking hands, he tried covering the tear, but it only ripped wider.
Rrrrrrip!
This time, loud laughter exploded from the students.
Tunde’s face burned with shame.
The principal looked disappointed.
“You are one of the brightest students in this school, yet you appear this careless?”
Tunde could not say a word.
At that moment, he remembered his mother’s warning.
But it was already too late…
And what happened after school that day changed Tunde completely.

Episode 1: The Torn Uniform

Every morning, 14-year-old Tunde walked proudly to school in his neatly ironed uniform. Though his mother was a roadside food seller and money was never enough, she always told him:

“No matter how hard life gets, always look responsible.”

One Monday morning, while dressing up for school, Tunde noticed a tiny tear under the pocket of his school shirt.

“Ah… it’s small,” he muttered. “Nobody will even see it.”

His mother noticed it too.
“Tunde, bring that shirt tonight let me stitch it before it gets worse.”

But Tunde laughed carelessly.
“Mama, it’s nothing.”

The next day, the tear became slightly bigger.
Still, he ignored it.

By Thursday, one of his classmates pointed at him during assembly and whispered loudly:
“See Tunde’s shirt!”
A few students laughed.

Tunde quickly covered the tear with his hand, embarrassed.
That afternoon, his mother asked again:
“Where is the shirt? Let me repair it.”

But Tunde dropped it carelessly on the chair and rushed out to play football.

He had no idea that the “small tear” was about to bring him the biggest embarrassment of his life…

To be continued tomorrow…
