BINDURA UNIVERSITY SEEKS PARTNERSHIP WITH POLYUNWANA ON CERAMIC, GLASS TECHNOLOGY

The Vice Chancellor of Bindura University of Science Education, Professor Eddie Mwenje, has expressed the institution’s interest in partnering with Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana (Polyunwana) to establish a Department of Ceramic and Silicate Technology in Zimbabwe.
Professor Mwenje made this known during a recent visit to the Polytechnic alongside Mr. Daniel Chihombori. The visit was aimed at fostering academic and technological collaboration between both institutions following the university’s discovery of Polyunwana’s strength and specialization in Ceramic Technology.
The delegation was received on behalf of the Rector, Dr. Felix Uroko Attah, by the Deputy Rector (Administration), Mr. Nathaniel Maduabuchi Ohaegbulem, in the company of the Dean, School of Industrial Technology, Dr. Chibueke E. Kalu; the Head of Department of Ceramic and Glass Technology, Engr. Norbert Osonwa; and former Head of Department of Ceramic and Glass Technology, Mr. Odewale Isiaka Olajide.
During the visit, Professor Mwenje described Nigeria as one of Africa’s leading countries in glassware production and explained that the visit formed part of efforts by the Zimbabwean institution to expand into ceramic and glass manufacturing.
He noted that the university, which has a student population of about 8,000, is committed to advancing science education across Zimbabwe and had recently ventured into the production of laptops, mobile phones and tablets aimed at providing affordable technology to schools and businesses in rural communities.
The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that the delegation had earlier visited Ahmadu Bello University and Institute of Management and Technology before arriving at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana.
During a tour of the Department of Ceramic and Glass Technology, Engr. Osonwa showcased the facilities and explained the processes involved in ceramic and glass production, including how silicate is derived from sand and combined with other materials to produce finished ceramic products.
At the end of the tour, Professor Mwenje expressed satisfaction with the facilities and technical expertise available at the institution. He noted that the university was impressed by the practical application of the equipment and the depth of knowledge demonstrated by the department.
He also indicated the university’s readiness to collaborate with the Polytechnic in areas such as equipment procurement, academic support, and the establishment of a diploma programme in Ceramics and Glass Technology.
The Vice Chancellor further revealed plans for staff and research exchange programmes between both institutions, aimed at promoting knowledge sharing and strengthening research in silicon and related technologies.

WITED MAIDEN NATIONAL CONFERENCE UNDERWAY: POLYUNWANA CHAPTER COORDINATOR'S OPENING ADDRESS

The maiden National Conference of Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED) is underway at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, with activities continuing into its second day after opening yesterday.

The three-day event, which will conclude tomorrow, has drawn participants from across the country and is themed “Women in Technical Education and Development: Empowering Talent in Youth and Driving Inclusive Innovation for a Sustainable Future.”

In her opening address, the Chapter Coordinator of the Polytechnic’s WITED chapter described the conference as a defining moment for advancing women’s role in technical education.

She stressed the need to equip women with relevant skills, dismantle systemic barriers, and position them as key drivers of innovation and development.

She noted that empowering women in technical fields has far-reaching impact, not only on individuals but on industries, economies, and society at large, adding that inclusive innovation is critical to achieving sustainable development.

The coordinator also acknowledged the contributions of South East Coordinator Ngozi Achilike and the chapter’s matron, Mary Chinyere Attah, for their support and mentorship.

She, however, highlighted funding challenges affecting WITED activities, particularly programmes aimed at supporting indigent girls and vulnerable women, and appealed for assistance from stakeholders.

Participants have been encouraged to engage actively and build collaborations that will drive impact beyond the conference.

As of the time of this report, the keynote speaker is yet to mount the podium, with proceedings continuing.

Women in Nigerian Polytechnics, under the aegis of the Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED), have converged on Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, for the maiden edition of their National Conference.

The theme of the conference is “Women in Technical Education: Empowering Talents in Tech and Driving Inclusive Innovation for a Sustainable Future.”

The conference, scheduled to run from April 21 to April 24, 2026, is designed to expose participants to emerging trends, practical skills, and collaborative opportunities in technology and innovation that can enhance professional growth, promote inclusivity, and drive sustainable development within the technical education sector.

The keynote address will be delivered by Princess Regina Elechi Amadi, National Coordinator of WITED.

CORPS MEMBERS LAUD AKANU IBIAM POLY UNWANA FOR WARM RECEPTION, SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT AT SEND-OFF

Corps members serving at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Ebonyi State, have commended the institution for its warm reception, peaceful environment, and consistent commitment to their welfare throughout the 2024/2025 service year. The Batch A Streams I and II corps members, speaking during their send-off ceremony, noted that their positive experience contradicted initial negative perceptions they had about Ebonyi State. They praised the serene nature of the Polytechnic’s host communities and the welcoming disposition of the indigenes.

The send-off ceremony, held at the Polytechnic’s Auditorium, marked the successful completion of their one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. In his opening remarks, the Rector, Dr. Felix Uroko Attah, represented by the Deputy Rector (Academics), Dr. Fidelis Ijeh Nsude, described the event as an annual tradition to recognise corps members’ contributions. He noted that their testimonies affirm the NYSC scheme continues to achieve its core objectives of fostering national integration, promoting unity, and equipping graduates with practical experience. He advised the outgoing corps members to prioritise self-development and skill acquisition, stressing that young graduates must remain focused and seize opportunities to nurture their talents.

Delivering her valedictory speech, the Corps Liaison Officer (CLO), Ogba Mary Oghenekeuwe, expressed deep appreciation to the institution’s management and prayed for its continued progress. During the free comments session, corps members highlighted the kindness and professionalism of staff, noting that the peaceful and orderly community enabled a smooth service year. They added that their time at their Places of Primary Assignment (PPAs) allowed them to build meaningful professional relationships and contribute positively to teaching and learning.

In his remarks, Mr. Adeola Asunbo, representing the Registrar, commended the corps members for their dedication, hard work, and commitment. He noted that their discipline and teamwork brought pride to the institution. Urging them to be mindful of Nigeria’s challenging economic environment, he stressed that no honest work was too small and advised them to acquire practical skills for self-reliance while cautioning against any actions that could jeopardise their future. Similarly, Mr. Josephat Okonkwo, representing the Bursar, praised the corps members for their exemplary conduct, noting that no disciplinary cases were recorded during their stay. He encouraged them to share their positive experiences to project the Polytechnic and the region in a favourable light, advising them to remain patient, stay focused, and embrace diligence and sincerity as keys to long-term success.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the Corps Liaison Officer to the management of the institution, marking a fitting end to a memorable and impactful service year.

SUG Commends Rector Dr. Felix U. Attah Over Landmark Bridge Project
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana has expressed profound joy and appreciation to the institution’s management following the commencement of the long-anticipated bridge project aimed at easing students’ access to the campus.
The bridge, initiated under the leadership of the Rector, Dr. Felix U. Attah, is designed to address mobility challenges faced by students and staff, particularly during the rainy season when movement across the border becomes difficult.
In a statement released by the SUG leadership, the union described the project as “a student-centered intervention and a clear demonstration of responsive leadership.” The union noted that the development will not only enhance safety but also reduce stress and transportation difficulties experienced daily by students.
SUG executives praised Dr. Attah and his management team for prioritizing students’ welfare and infrastructural growth. They further assured the management of students’ continued support and cooperation as the institution advances toward greater development.
The union emphasized that the bridge project marks a significant step in improving the academic environment and strengthening the Polytechnic’s commitment to excellence.

The Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana Staff Primary School successfully organized its Second Inter-House Sports Competition under the distinguished chairmanship of Dr. Joseph Bagi Suleman.
The event attracted pupils, teachers, parents, and invited guests who gathered to witness an exciting and colourful display of sporting talent and teamwork.
The competition featured several thrilling activities including march past, parents’ egg race, sack race, sack bag crunch, boys’ 4×100 relay race, girls’ 4×100 relay race, and boys’ football match. Pupils and parents participated actively, creating a lively and entertaining atmosphere throughout the event.
After an intense and competitive outing among the various houses, Blue House emerged as the overall winner, demonstrating outstanding performance and determination.
The event highlighted the importance of sports in promoting physical fitness, unity, discipline, and teamwork among pupils, making the day a memorable and successful celebration for the entire school community.

🚨 CAMPUS UPDATE 🚨
The Staff Secondary School of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana has successfully commissioned newly installed solar street lights to improve lighting and security within the school environment.
The project was officially commissioned by the Rector and Proprietor, Felix Uroko Attah, who performed the tape-cutting ceremony during the event.
The installation of the solar street lights is expected to enhance visibility and create a safer atmosphere for students and staff, especially during evening hours.
This development reflects the institution’s commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting a better learning environment.
