DAY 3 — BLEACHING PALM OIL

Why do soap makers bleach palm oil?

The main reason is to reduce the natural colour of the oil.

This can be useful when:

Making light-coloured soap

Making brown/transparent-style soap where you want better colour control

Trying to reduce the strong colour contributed by red palm oil

Important point

Bleaching should not be presented as simply “making bad oil good.”

If the oil is already rancid, contaminated, or badly degraded, bleaching is not a magic repair process.

One mistake beginners make is thinking:

“The darker I bleach the oil, the better.”

That is not necessarily true. Excessive heating can damage the oil and create an unpleasant smell or affect its quality.

DAY 2 — CHOOSING THE RIGHT PALM OIL

Not every palm oil will give exactly the same result.

What should you look for?

Choose palm oil that:

1)Has no unpleasant rancid smell
2)Has been properly stored
3)Is free from obvious contamination
4)Has not been excessively degraded by heat or poor storage

Red palm oil vs bleached palm oil

Red palm oil naturally contains pigments such as carotenoids, which give it its strong orange/red colour.

Bleached palm oil has been processed to reduce much of that colour.

This is useful when you want to produce a lighter-coloured or brown soap rather than a strongly orange/red bar.

Does every palm-oil soap need bleached oil?

Answer is big No.

If you want the natural colour of palm oil, you can use it without bleaching.

If your desired finished colour requires less of the natural red/orange pigment, you may choose to bleach it using an appropriate soap-making method.
