𝗝𝗔𝗠𝗕 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗦 𝗔𝗗𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗠𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 (𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘁𝗰)
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) uses the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) to manage admissions into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Candidates may encounter different messages when checking their admission status on CAPS. Understanding what each status means can help candidates know what stage their admission is at and what action, if any, is required.
1. NOT ADMITTED
This means that no institution has currently recommended or offered you admission through CAPS.
However, seeing “Not Admitted” does not necessarily mean that you have been rejected. Institutions usually upload admission recommendations in batches, so your status can change later.
Candidates should continue checking CAPS regularly, particularly when their preferred institution begins releasing admission lists. They should also make sure their O’Level results have been properly uploaded.
2. ADMISSION IN PROGRESS (AIP)
“Admission in Progress” generally means that your institution has recommended you for admission and JAMB is currently reviewing or validating the recommendation.
The review may involve checking your O’Level results, subject combination, UTME score and other admission requirements.
This is generally a positive stage. Candidates normally do not need to take any immediate action apart from continuing to monitor their CAPS status.
If everything is satisfactory, the status may eventually change to Admitted/Admission Offered.
3. RECOMMENDED
When CAPS shows “Recommended,” it means that your institution has formally recommended you for admission.
JAMB may still be carrying out its final checks before the admission becomes an official offer.
Candidates should therefore continue monitoring their CAPS profile until the status changes to a formal admission offer.
4. ADMITTED / ADMISSION OFFERED
This is the stage where JAMB has officially approved an admission offer for you through CAPS.
Once admitted, you are expected to accept or reject the admission within the permitted period.
After accepting the admission, you can proceed to print your JAMB admission letter.
Candidates should not ignore an admission offer because failure to respond within the applicable period could result in losing the offer.
5. TRANSFER APPROVAL / PROGRAMME TRANSFER
A Transfer Approval notification may appear when your institution wants to offer you a different course from the one you originally selected.
This can happen for reasons such as limited spaces, cut-off marks or other admission requirements.
The candidate is required to indicate whether they accept or reject the proposed course transfer through the appropriate section on CAPS.
Accepting the transfer allows the admission process for the new programme to continue.
6. ACCEPT ADMISSION
When an official admission offer is available, the candidate can select Accept on CAPS to confirm that they want the admission.
The acceptance confirms your decision to take up the offered admission.
Candidates should carefully consider the institution and course before accepting, because acceptance is generally treated as a firm decision for that admission cycle.
In some circumstances, candidates may also be required to complete biometric verification at an accredited JAMB CBT centre.
7. REJECT ADMISSION
The “Reject Admission” option is available to candidates who do not want to accept the particular admission offer.
Rejecting an offer may allow your profile to remain available for consideration by other institutions, including possible opportunities through the JAMB Marketplace.
However, candidates should think carefully before rejecting an admission because the original offer may no longer be available afterward.
SMS OPTION FOR ACCEPTING OR REJECTING ADMISSION
Candidates can also use the phone number linked to their JAMB registration where the SMS option is applicable.
The format provided is:
[JAMB Registration Number] ACCEPT — send to 55019 or 66019
{ or }
[JAMB Registration Number] REJECT — send to 55019 or 66019
Candidates should confirm the current JAMB procedure before using the SMS option, as procedures may change.
8. JAMB MARKETPLACE
The JAMB Marketplace provides another avenue through which institutions with available admission spaces can identify eligible candidates who meet their requirements.
An institution may therefore consider a candidate for an alternative admission opportunity through the Marketplace.
If a Marketplace offer is presented, the candidate can choose whether to accept or reject it.
9. BLANK STATUS / NO UPDATE
Sometimes the admission-status section may appear blank or may not display a specific admission message.
This generally indicates that the institution has not yet uploaded an admission recommendation for the candidate or that the admission process has not started for that candidate.
Candidates should continue checking CAPS and should ensure that their O’Level results are correctly uploaded and visible.
10. PENDING / ON HOLD
A “Pending” or “On Hold” status may indicate that there is an issue requiring attention before the admission process can proceed.
Possible issues may include problems with O’Level verification, subject-combination discrepancies or conflicting candidate records.
Candidates who encounter such issues should investigate the matter and make the necessary corrections, usually through an accredited CBT centre or the appropriate JAMB channel.
