INNOVATING URBAN FUTURES: GLOBAL EXPERTS CONVERGE AT THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, ADO-EKITI
The School of Environmental Studies of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, yesterday, 14th August 2024, inaugurated the 9th Biennial International Conference of the School of Environmental Studies. This prestigious gathering, which has attracted global experts from diverse backgrounds, is not just a platform for discussion but a crucial catalyst for reshaping the future of urban environments globally. The theme, "Urban Governance and Environmental Challenges in a Diverse Democracy," underscores the pressing and urgent nature of the issues we face in urban governance and environmental management within a diverse democracy.
The event opened with remarks from the Rector and the Chief Host, Engr. Temitope J. Alake set the tone for the conference by underscoring the critical need for cities to evolve into sustainable ecosystems. This is not just a goal but a necessity for our future. "Our cities must harmonise economic growth with environmental stewardship," he stated, calling for innovative ideas and collaborative solutions to drive progress towards this vital goal.
Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Health of Oyo State, Dr (Mrs) Oluwaserimi A. Ajetunmobi, Dr Olumide Obe highlighted the crucial intersection between environmental health and public well-being. He stressed that we can lead to healthier, more sustainable communities by pooling our resources and knowledge through collaborative efforts. This underscores the power of unity in addressing these challenges and inspires us to work together for a better future.
One of the conference's standout moments was the address by Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and esteemed Professor of Building at Osun State University. With compelling insights, Prof. Olusola-Eleka explored the complexities of urban management within Nigeria's diverse democratic landscape. His expertise in the field provided the audience with a deeper understanding of the issues at hand, leaving them feeling informed and enlightened. He emphasised the need for inclusive governance that reflects urban populations' socio-economic and cultural diversity. He also highlighted Nigeria's recurring building collapses, urging stricter adherence to building codes and adopting sustainable construction practices.
Adding to the wealth of knowledge, Arc Mobolaji A. Adeniyi, FNIA, President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), represented by Arc Adetunji Bello, Chair of NIA Ondo State, delivered a keynote address. He articulated the vital role of built environment professionals in shaping resilient cities, proposing strategies such as integrated planning, community engagement, and adopting green technologies to confront the environmental challenges of urban areas. His address provided a comprehensive roadmap for urban development facing ecological difficulties, including specific examples of successful projects and initiatives.
The presence of Oba (QS) James Oladipupo Kolade, the Olupoti of Ipoti-Ekiti, lent cultural depth to the event. As a royal dignitary and quantity surveyor, his participation underscored the theme's relevance to the current national situation, blending tradition with modern challenges. His unique perspective as a traditional leader and a professional in the built environment added a valuable dimension to the conference.
Mr. Chris A. Odeyemi, Dean of the School of Environmental Studies, warmly welcomed attendees, stressing the conference's significance in addressing today's environmental challenges. His emphasis on the importance of the conference not only made the audience feel engaged but highlighted their crucial role in these discussions. He commended the Local Organizing Committee, led by Arc. Peter O. Adewale, for their dedication and hard work in bringing the conference to life, fostering a sense of appreciation and respect among the audience.
In a heartfelt vote of thanks, Mrs. Oluwakemisola Aruna, Secretary of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed appreciation to all participants. Her gratitude made the audience feel appreciated and valued for their contributions. She also encouraged active engagement in the upcoming technical sessions, which is crucial in addressing the conference's key themes.
As the conference progresses, 116 expert-led presentations will delve into topics ranging from urban planning to sustainable development, aiming to generate actionable insights and foster collaboration.
