*LANTAN FOCUS AND PROGRAMMES*
As we continue to welcome new members to the platform, we want to quickly establish some basic facts regarding our focus and activities of the Association.
We remain focused on our goal of becoming an umbrella professional Association for all language teachers in Nigeria, whose very name shall inspire deep respect and whose collective voice shall be loud and significant in the formulation and implementation of policies regarding the status and use of language in specific sectors of our national life, as defined by the National Language Policy, most especially in the educational sector.
For this to happen, we need to establish a well-organized structure and operate with informed understanding right from the beginning. We hereby present the policy focus of LANTAN to us all for consideration and mental preparation. Below are our policies regarding some critical factors of our essence and activities:
1. *Membership:* There shall be two (classes) of membership:
- Full membership
- Associate membership
*Full membership:*
To qualify for the full membership of LANTAN, a person must possess a minimum of NCE qualification in any language spoken, taught or used in Nigeria, or a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics.
*Associate membership:*
Associate membership shall be for students of tertiary institutions who are studying any of the languages indicated above or Linguistics.
Other details regarding membership are as defined in the Constitution.
2. There shall be a database of all registered members and their areas of specialization and interest. This database shall from time to time be updated as the individual member attains additional qualifications. One of the purposes of keeping a comprehensive database of members is to be able to recommend members to employers or for consultancy services based on their qualifications and locations.
3. Every verified member shall be issued a dated membership certificate with a membership number as contained in the database. Membership shall be renewable annually.
*PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES*
Our programmes and activities shall include, but not limited to:
1. *Annual Conferences*:
The first Annual Conference of LANTAN will be held in the first quarter of 2025. The theme, venue and date will be announced here before the end of November 2024.
2. *Periodic Conventions*
The LANTAN Conventions shall be held biannually and shall be both an academic activity as well as a carnival in celebration of our linguistic and cultural diversity. _(Details shall be announced soon)._
3. *Seminars and Workshops*
Seminars, workshops and other training programmes shall be among our key Continuous Professional Development initiatives both for the enhancement of our members' knowledge base, as well as consultancy and advocacy engagements.
*Note* : Members shall be expected to participate actively in all the activities of LANTAN. Any member who for three consecutive years does not register for and participate in the Association's programmes shall be removed from the database, and shall be required to start the process of membership afresh on return. _(Details in the Constitution)_
*PUBLICATIONS*
1. *Journals* : As a matter of crucial importance, the Association shall embark on the publication of high quality, peer-reviewed journals which shall be published both in paper and online.
2. *Newsletters and Periodicals*: The Association shall also embark on the publication of Newsletters and Periodicals for full engagement with members and to publicize the activities of the Association. The Association shall maintain active presence on specific social media platforms for enhanced visibility and engagement.
*REGISTRATION*
Membership Registration shall commence before the end of October 2024 and we intend to utilize this WhatsApp platform to reach out to potential members. Details to be announced soon.
