The Tragedy of the CH-46D That Fell Into the Pacific

December 9, 1999. During a training exercise off Southern California, a U.S. Marine Corps CH-46D Sea Knight carrying 18 Marines approached the flight deck of USNS Pecos too low. Its rear landing gear became entangled in the safety net, dragging the helicopter sideways before it plunged into the Pacific. Eleven were rescued. Seven died.
