Irregular periods are often one of the first signs of perimenopause — the transition phase before menopause officially begins.
Perimenopause can start in your 40s (sometimes late 30s), and during this time, your hormones begin to fluctuate.
🌿 Why Do Periods Become Irregular?
During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone levels don’t rise and fall in their usual pattern.
Because of this hormonal shift:
Ovulation may not happen every month
The uterine lining may build up differently
Your cycle becomes unpredictable

Skipping months
Shorter cycles (period comes earlier than usual)
Longer cycles (period comes later than usual)
Heavier bleeding
Lighter bleeding
Spotting between periods
Some months may feel “normal,” and others may surprise you.

Irregular cycles can continue for several years during perimenopause until menopause is reached (which is defined as 12 consecutive months without a period).

While irregular periods are common during perimenopause, seek medical advice if you experience:
Extremely heavy bleeding (soaking a pad/tampon every hour)
Bleeding lasting longer than 7–10 days
Bleeding after s*x
Very large clots
Bleeding after menopause
