The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned prospective students against accepting admissions offered outside its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), warning that such candidates risk losing recognition as legitimate students.

According to the Board, any admission not processed through CAPS and backed by an official JAMB admission letter is illegal. Candidates who secure "backdoor" admissions do so entirely at their own risk.

𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗦-𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, speaking through the Board's Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, at the 2026 Annual Education Summit organised by the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN) in Abuja, stressed that only candidates who print their JAMB admission letters via CAPS are considered duly admitted and included on the official matriculation list.

"For you to be regarded as duly admitted, you must print your JAMB admission letter. If an institution gives you admission through the back door without JAMB documentation, that is an illegal admission," he said.

He warned that students whose names are absent from the matriculation list may face serious setbacks during their academic programme.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Oloyede also cautioned institutions against exceeding their approved admission quotas, noting that any student admitted beyond capacity would not be recognised.

"If a programme has approval to admit 50 students, it cannot admit 51. That extra candidate becomes an illegal admission because the name will not appear on the matriculation list," he explained.

He urged candidates to verify their admission status independently, stating: "It is not JAMB's responsibility to fight such battles. Candidates must ensure their admissions are processed through CAPS. Otherwise, they stand the risk of being stranded."

𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗦 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆

Oloyede noted that CAPS allows candidates to track their admission status and assess their competitiveness in real time. He advised applicants with lower scores in highly competitive courses—such as Medicine, Law, and Nursing—to consider alternative programmes or institutions to improve their chances.

"The system now enables candidates to know where they stand. It helps them make informed decisions rather than applying blindly," he added.

He further warned candidates to safeguard their SIM cards, describing them as critical identity tools within Nigeria's computer-based examination system.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), represented by Malam Lawal Faruk on behalf of Executive Secretary Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, announced plans to strengthen monitoring of universities after every matriculation exercise to curb quota violations.

"We are determined to stop the abuse. After every matriculation exercise, NUC will visit universities to verify that institutions have not exceeded their approved admission quotas," Ribadu stated.

He acknowledged that some institutions still circumvent CAPS despite its regulatory design and disclosed that stiffer sanctions are being considered through ongoing amendments to the NUC Act.

𝗙𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱
On graduate employability, Ribadu confirmed that industrial attachments and internships remain compulsory, with technology to be deployed ensuring genuine student participation. The Commission has also developed national guidelines on micro-credentials and will encourage universities to host job fairs and boost entrepreneurship training.

Addressing transcript delays, he said NUC is collaborating with universities to automate processing while preserving institutional autonomy. He clarified that the government's moratorium on private university licences applies only to new applications, not those already in the pipeline.

On Artificial Intelligence, Ribadu revealed that NUC has issued a national AI policy for universities, with annual compliance monitoring to promote ethical AI use in teaching, learning, and research. Universities will submit yearly implementation reports, and lecturers will receive capacity-building support to manage AI-driven learning environments effectively.

The summit convened policymakers, regulators, institutional leaders, and journalists to review ongoing reforms and strengthen quality assurance, admissions integrity, innovation, and accountability across Nigeria's tertiary education sector.
