A NATION IS ONLY AS STRONG AS THE INSTITUTIONS ITS CITIZENS CHOOSE TO BUILD, PROTECT AND STRENGTHEN.

Leadership is not confined to public office, boardrooms or positions of authority. It is also expressed through responsible citizenship, ethical participation, accountability and a commitment to the institutions that sustain society.

This is why the Chartered Institute of Leadership and Governance (USA), Nigeria Chapter, invites the public to an important conversation:

β€œFOLLOWER TO NATION BUILDERS: THE CITIZEN’S ROLE IN STRENGTHENING INSTITUTIONS”

WHO BUILDS A STRONG NATION? IT STARTS WITH YOU

CILG SEPTEMBER MONTHLY LEADERSHIP FORUM 2026

The Chartered Institute of Leadership and Governance (USA), Nigeria Chapter, invites members, fellows, leaders, professionals and nation-builders to the September Monthly Leadership Forum.

This month’s conversation addresses a question that affects every society:

Followers to Nation Builders: The Citizen’s Role in Strengthening Institutions

Strong institutions are not built by government and political leaders alone. Citizens also have a critical responsibility in promoting accountability, protecting public institutions, demanding good governance and contributing positively to national development.
And there is perhaps no better person to lead this conversation than our distinguished guest speaker, Rt. Hon. Pastor Olubunmi Adelugba, FCILG.

Rt. Hon. Pastor Olubunmi Adelugba,FCILG brings a rare combination of professional expertise, legislative leadership, public administration, and practical governance experience.

She made history as the first female Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, after previously serving as Chief Whip and Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation.

Her leadership journey therefore provides first-hand insight into how institutions function, how legislation shapes society, and how citizens and leaders can contribute to stronger governance.

Her experience extends beyond the legislature. She has served as Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Human Capital Development and Special Adviser on Revenue Matters and Taxation in Ekiti State, where she contributed to institutional development, social programmes and reforms that increased Internally Generated Revenue.

With over three decades of professional experience, she is also a Chartered Accountant, tax expert and governance professional whose expertise spans public finance, corporate governance, institutional reform, financial management and organisational restructuring.

πŸŒ‡ FRIDAY LEADERSHIP REFLECTION

The Leader in the Mirror

At the end of every week, most people ask, "What have I achieved?" Great leaders ask a different question: "What kind of person am I becoming?"

Success can be measured by promotions, profits, awards, and titles. Leadership, however, is measured by something far deeperβ€”the lives you influence, the trust you build, and the legacy you leave behind.

Imagine two leaders walking into the weekend.

The first is excited because every target was achieved. The numbers look impressive, the reports are excellent, and the applause is loud.

The second leader also met important targets, but before leaving the office, they paused for a moment of reflection.

"Did I listen before making decisions?"

"Did I encourage someone who was struggling?"

"Did my actions strengthen my team or weaken it?"

"If I lead the same way next week, will my organization become better or worse?"

That moment of honest reflection is what separates a successful manager from an exceptional leader.

Leadership is not only about producing results.

It is about producing results without losing your integrity, your compassion, or your purpose.

Every week leaves us with two things:

Results...

And lessons.

Results tell us what happened.

Lessons prepare us for what comes next.

Before this week comes to an end, take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:

πŸ”Ή What decision am I most proud of this week?

πŸ”Ή What mistake taught me the biggest lesson?

πŸ”Ή Whose life became better because I showed up?

πŸ”Ή What must I improve before Monday arrives?

Never underestimate the power of reflection.

A leader who reflects grows.

A leader who grows inspires confidence.

A leader who inspires confidence leaves a legacy.

🌱 Weekend Challenge

Don't carry only your tired body into the weekend.

Carry a wiser mind.

Rest your body.

Refresh your spirit.

Strengthen your character.

Return next week not just with renewed energy, but with renewed purpose.

πŸ’ Friday Reflection

What is the greatest leadership lesson this week has taught you?

Share your answer in the comments. Your experience could become someone else's breakthrough.

The Leadership Skill That Is Quietly Disappearing

Everyone wants to be heard.

Very few people are willing to listen.

One of the most underrated leadership skills is active listening. Great leaders don't interrupt to prove they are right. They listen to understand, ask thoughtful questions, and make informed decisions.

Many workplace conflicts, failed projects, and broken relationships don't happen because people lack intelligenceβ€”they happen because people fail to listen.

Before responding in your next meeting or conversation, ask yourself:
"Have I truly understood the other person's perspective?"

That simple habit can transform your effectiveness as a leader.

At the Chartered Institute of Leadership and Governance USA, Nigeria Chapter, we are committed to developing ethical, competent, and forward-thinking leaders through professional leadership development, governance education, certification, research, and capacity building.

Become part of a network of leaders committed to excellence in leadership and governance.

πŸŒ… MONDAY LEADERSHIP MOTIVATION

The Empty Chair
━━━━━━━

A leadership trainer once entered a boardroom before an important meeting.

At the center of the room, he placed an empty chair.

Everyone looked confused.

One executive finally asked,

"Who are we waiting for?"

The trainer replied,

"The people who will be affected by every decision we make today."

Silence filled the room.

The chair remained empty, but suddenly everyone saw someone sitting there.

😐A struggling employee.
😐A young graduate seeking an opportunity.
😐A customer.
😐A family.
😐A community.
😐A future generation.

The trainer then said something the room never forgot:

"The greatest leadership mistake is making decisions without remembering who will live with the consequences."

πŸ’‘ Leadership is not about titles.

⛔️️It is not about offices.

⛔️It is not about power.

Leadership is about responsibility.

βœ…οΈ Every decision a leader makes creates a ripple effect.

βœ…οΈ A careless word can discourage someone.

βœ… ️A wise decision can change a life.

βœ…οΈ A policy can create opportunities.

βœ… ️A neglected responsibility can destroy trust built over many years.

The truth is that leadership is not tested when things are easy.

Leadership is tested when difficult choices must be made.

When shortcuts are available.

When nobody is watching.

When personal interests conflict with what is right.

That is when character speaks.

That is when true leadership emerges.

Many people aspire to become leaders.

Few stop to consider the weight of leadership.

Because leadership is not just about carrying authority.

It is about carrying consequences.

🌱 This Week's Leadership Challenge

Before making an important decision this week, imagine an empty chair in front of you.

Ask yourself:
❓ Who will be affected by this decision?

❓ Will this create value or problems?

❓ Am I choosing what is easy or what is right?

❓ If everyone knew how I made this decision, would I still be proud of it?

The quality of our leadership is often revealed by the questions we ask ourselves before we act.

πŸ’ Leadership Reflection:
If there was an empty chair in front of you today representing the people affected by your leadership, who would be sitting there?

And what decision do you need to make differently because of them?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

Your reflection may inspire another leader.

πŸŒ… MONDAY LEADERSHIP MOTIVATION

The Most Dangerous Phrase in Leadership Is: "That's How We Have Always Done It."

Many organizations remain stagnant, not because they lack talented people, but because they have become comfortable with old ways of thinking.

The world is changing.

Technology is changing.

Business is changing.

Governance is changing.

Leadership is changing.

Yet many leaders are still relying on yesterday's solutions to solve today's challenges.

A wise leader respects tradition but is not imprisoned by it.

Leadership is about having the courage to ask:
πŸ’ Can this be done better?

πŸ’ Is there a more effective approach?

πŸ’ What opportunities are we missing because we refuse to change?

The most successful leaders are not necessarily the smartest.

They are often the most adaptable.

They learn.

They unlearn.

They relearn.

They understand that growth begins where comfort ends.

This week, challenge yourself to do one thing differently.

Read a book outside your field.

Learn a new skill.

Listen to a different perspective.

Review a process that has not been improved in years.

Small improvements made consistently create extraordinary results over time.

πŸš€ Remember:
The future does not belong to those who resist change. It belongs to those who prepare for it.

πŸ’‘ Leadership Reflection:
What is one habit, process, or mindset you need to change to become a more effective leader?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

Leadership in Practice

Insight 6: The Discipline of Consistency

Leadership is often associated with vision, charisma, and bold decision-making. Yet, some of the most successful leaders are not remembered for occasional moments of brilliance but for their ability to remain consistent over time.

Anyone can demonstrate excellence once.

The challenge is sustaining it.

A leader may inspire confidence through a powerful speech, a successful project, or a decisive action. However, trust is not built through isolated achievements. Trust develops when people repeatedly experience the same standards, values, and reliability regardless of changing circumstances.

Consistency transforms leadership from an event into a reputation.

Leadership Puzzle: The Bridge of Trust -
Imagine you are crossing a bridge every day to get to work.

One day, the bridge is strong.
The next day, it is unstable.
The following day, it is reliable again.

Even if the bridge performs well most of the time, would you fully trust it?

Now consider leadership:
Would people confidently follow a leader whose principles change depending on the audience, whose standards vary according to convenience, or whose commitments are fulfilled only when conditions are favourable?

Question:
What inspires greater confidence in leadership: occasional excellence or dependable consistency?

And if your team, organization, or community were asked to describe your leadership today, would they describe you as inspiring, or as reliable enough to trust repeatedly?

Reflection:
People do not place their confidence in leaders because they are perfect.

They place their confidence in leaders because they are predictable in character.

A leader who consistently demonstrates integrity, fairness, accountability, and competence creates an environment where people feel secure, motivated, and willing to contribute.

While talent may attract followers, consistency retains them.

Practical Application:
β€’ Align daily actions with stated values.
β€’ Maintain the same ethical standards in public and private settings.
β€’ Honour commitments, especially the small ones.
β€’ Build systems and habits that support dependable performance.
β€’ Focus on long-term credibility rather than short-term impressions.

Remember: people may admire potential, but they trust consistency.

Closing Remark:
Leadership is not proven by what you do occasionally. It is revealed by what you do repeatedly.

The most respected leaders are not those who shine once in a while, but those whose principles remain steady through success, failure, praise, and criticism.

Consistency is where trust begins.
