🌹📍✨ ENGLISH LESSON OF THE DAY
ELLIPSIS (...)

Have you ever seen three dots (...) in a book or article and wondered what they mean?

Those three dots are called an ellipsis.
An ellipsis (...) is a punctuation mark used to show that one or more words have been deliberately omitted from a quoted passage.
1. Omission at the Beginning or in the Middle of a Quotation
When words are omitted at the beginning or middle of a quotation, use three dots (...).
Example 1

"...men cannot be forced to trust."
The complete quotation is:
"Confidence is a thing that cannot be produced by compulsion; men cannot be forced to trust."

Example 2
"Arise, O compatriots...obey."
The omitted words are:
"Nigeria's call, obey."

2. Omission at the End of a Quotation
When words are omitted at the end of a complete sentence, use four dots (....).

Example

"The proof of the pudding is...."
The omitted words are:
"in the eating."
Why are four dots used?
The first three dots (...) indicate that some words have been omitted, while the fourth dot (.) is the full stop that ends the sentence.

Quick Recap

✅ Use three dots (...) when words are omitted at the beginning or middle of a quotation.

✅ Use four dots (....) when words are omitted at the end of a complete sentence.
Practice Time
Complete the sentence
using the correct ellipsis:
"Honesty is the best...."
Can you supply the omitted words?

🚫 Don't Say "So Therefore"💢

One common mistake many Nigerians make in both speaking and writing is using "so therefore" together.

❌ This is grammatically incorrect.
The words so and therefore have the same function—they both show result or consequence. Using them together is redundant because they repeat the same idea.
Use either so or therefore, not both.

🌺Examples

❌ I didn't see oranges, so therefore I bought mangoes.

✔️ I didn't see oranges, so I bought mangoes.

✔️ I didn't see oranges; therefore, I bought mangoes.

❌ The girl was crying, so therefore I took her to her mother.

✔️ The girl was crying, so I took her to her mother.

✔️ The girl was crying; therefore, I took her to her mother.

❌ It was raining, so therefore we stayed indoors.

✔️ It was raining, so we stayed indoors.

✔️ It was raining; therefore, we stayed indoors.

❌ He studied hard, so therefore he passed the examination.

✔️ He studied hard, so he passed the examination.

✔️ He studied hard; therefore, he passed the examination.

💡 Quick Tip
So is more common in everyday conversation and informal writing.
Therefore is more formal and is often used in academic and professional writing.
Both words mean "for that reason" or "as a result." Since they express the same relationship, combining them is unnecessary.

Remember:💦

✅ Use so or therefore.
❌ Never use so therefore.

5 Common English Mistakes Nigerians Often Make

1. ❌ I am coming.

✅ I'll be right back. / I'll be back soon.

👉Explanation:

In Nigeria, "I am coming" is often used when leaving briefly.
In standard English, it means you are already on your way toward the listener.

👉Example:

❌ Wait here, I am coming.
(while walking away)

✅ Wait here, I'll be right back.

2. ❌ I have reached.

✅ I have arrived. / I got here.

👉Explanation:

"Reach" usually needs an object (reach the office, reach home). When talking about arriving, use arrive or get.

👉Example:

❌ I have reached.

✅ I have arrived.

3. ❌ She is my senior sister.

✅ She is my elder sister. / She is my older sister.

💝Explanation:

We use elder or older to compare siblings, not senior.

👉Example:

❌ My senior brother is a doctor.

✅ My elder brother is a doctor.

4. ❌ I am in the bus.

✅ I am on the bus.

👉Explanation:

For public transport such as buses, trains, and planes, we usually say on.

👉Example:

❌ I am in the bus.

✅ I am on the bus.

5. ❌ Kindly revert back to me.

✅ Please reply to me. / Please get back to me.

👉Explanation:

Revert already means "return," so revert back is redundant in modern English.

👉Example:

❌ Kindly revert back to me.

✅ Please reply to me.

🥰AGE CLASSIFICATIONS: ELDER, OLDER, ELDEST & OLDEST ✨

Many people use these words interchangeably, but they do not always mean the same thing.
Here is the correct usage:

✅ Elder refers to a person who is more advanced in age within a family or close relationship.

Example:

I am ten years old, while my brother is twelve.

He is my elder brother.
She is my elder sister.

✅ Older is the comparative form of old. It is used when comparing the ages of any two people or things, whether they are related or not.

Example:

Daniel and Tobi are friends, but Daniel is older than Tobi.

This building is older than the one next to it.

✅ Eldest is used for the oldest member of a family or group of related people.

Example:

Rosemary is the eldest of the four children.

He is the eldest son in the family.

✅ Oldest is the superlative form of old. It is used to describe the person or thing that has the greatest age in any group.

Example:

She is the oldest teacher in the school.

This is the oldest church in the town.

❌ A Common Mistake
Many people say:

❌ He is my junior brother.
This is incorrect.

✅ Say:🌺

He is my younger brother.

She is my younger sister.

He is my elder brother.

She is my elder sister.

📌 Remember💕

The words junior and senior do not refer to age. They are used to show rank, position, status, or to distinguish between people with the same name.

Examples:

She is my senior at work.

He is a junior officer.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Use "elder/younger" for family relationships and age, and "older/oldest" when comparing age in general.

💝Learn the rules, speak correctly, and write confidently.🌲
