The Head of Department, School of General studies @ Dr. Lizzy Asomugha continues to make meaningful contributions to National development as she represents the President / VC as a Special Guest of Honour at the Grand Finale of the 2026 FCT Young Queens Entrepreneurship Challenge held at Government Science School, Maitama, with the theme: “Skills for Life*.”
The event was well attended by distinguished personalities from the education sector, including the Permanent Secretary, the Mandate Secretary for Education, FCT, representatives of CEBAR Consulting Training Ltd, Dame E. O. Agu, mni, among other dignitaries.
*It was truly inspiring to witness brilliant presentations from six Science Secondary Schools showcasing innovative solutions to real-life challenges.*
Some outstanding innovations included:
• Government Technical Science School, Garki — invented reusable sanitary pads manufactured from plantain leaf fibre.
• GSS Maitama — introduced K-Bloom Fertilizer, an innovative fertilizer solution for farmers.
• St. Aloysious Science Secondary School — presented “A Cleaner Tomorrow”, a smart waste bin designed for reusable containers.
*In her goodwill message, Madam HoD encouraged the students to remain innovative because the time to make impact is now. The world is not waiting for them to finish school before they matter.*
She shared the inspiring story of Kelvin Doe from Sierra Leone, who at just 15 years old was building batteries and generators from scraps and trash materials. Kelvin didn’t wait for a fancy laboratory — he used curiosity, creativity, and determination. By 16, he was invited to MIT, USA, as a visiting practitioner.
Madam HoD , a passionate gender advocate also spoke about Eesha Khare from the United States, who at 17 invented a supercapacitor capable of charging a phone in 30 seconds while still in high school. She didn’t wait until university; she used the science knowledge available to her at the time.*
She therefore challenged the students to look around their environment and realize that they walk past several science problems every single day on their way to class. The real question is: will they simply complain about the problems, or will they rise to solve them?
*The future belongs to young minds that dare to innovate.*

The Opening Ceremony of Rotary
International District 9127 Conference (DISCON) 2026 witnessed the debuting of the Rotary Leadership Talks, a TED-style platform which featured selected speakers delivering high-impact presentations.
We are delighted that our Head of Department, school of General studies and Centre Leader, Centre of Excellence for Gender @ Dr. Lizzy Asomugha was selected as one of the speakers to speak on the topic : The future of Service Leadership.
Madam HoD defined Service leadership as an act of leading by putting the needs of others first.
She mentioned the things service leaders do which includes:
1. Listen first
2. Empower others
3. Build community
4. Act with empathy
She gave a story of The Coach Who Benched His Star Player for missing practice — even though it cost them a game. Why? Coach said, "I'm coaching men, not just winning games, this is because Service leaders prioritize character over short-term wins.
She also sighted the 35th President of America, JFK who visited the Janitor at NASA and asked him what he was doing. He replied: "Mr.
President, I'm helping put a man on the moon." A gesture that Service leadership isn't about title but about seeing how the role connects to the bigger mission
