FCT INDIGENES DEMAND ADMISSION QUOTA
AT UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA
CHAIRMEN of the six area councils of the FCT on Wednesday appealed to the
University of Abuja authorities to consider a certain percentage of qualified
indigenes of the territory for admission into their academic programmes.
The chairmen, who spoke under the auspices of the FCT branch of
Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), also donated an 18-
seater bus to the institution.
FCT ALGON chairman, also appealed to the authorities to
consider indigenes for teaching and non teaching vacancies as it is
obtained in other universities across the country.
The chairman commended the institution's Vice Chancellor for giving
priority to infrastructural development of the university despite lean
resources.
"Another aspect rated very high is the distance learning programme of the
university, of which you have moved the exams centres to the university's
main campus for effective supervision," he added.
Responding, Vice- Chancellor, Professor, Jamea Adelabu, commended the
FCT ALGON for the bus donation and for donating a classroom block as
well as a female hostel.
He advised the council chairmen to intensify efforts in educating their
children so that they will show more interest in the university, adding that
there are special considerations for them.
The Vice-Chancellor also assured the chairmen that indigenes will also be
given preference during the institution's current recruitment exercise.
