How to Run a Strong and Successful 2nd Term.
Introduction:
School owner roll up your sleeves, the second term doesn’t forgive laziness. It either rewards preparation or exposes gaps.
Here’s the straight talk on what to do to make your 2nd term successful, calm, and profitable 👇
1. Start With Brutal Honesty.
Before resumption or after resumption, sit down and ask yourself:
👉What worked last term?
👉What failed quietly?
👉Which staff carried the school and which ones were passengers?
The second term is not the time for denial. Fix what you can, replace what you must, and retrain where needed.
2. Reset Academic Expectations.
The second term is the engine room of the session.
👉Review schemes of work and pacing.
👉Ensure teachers are teaching not just “covering”.
👉Introduce mid-term assessments early (don’t wait till week 9 to panic).
If learning is weak, no amount of decoration or Instagram posts will save you.
3. Tighten Supervision (This Is Not Optional).
School owner must:
👉Walk through classrooms.
👉Check lesson plans weekly.
👉Review pupils’ books randomly.
👉Sit in at least one class per week.
Presence reduces nonsense, absence breeds excuses.
4. Staff Discipline + Motivation = Balance.
Second-term stress is real.
Set clear expectations (time, output, behaviour). Enforce consequences consistently.
But also motivate: praise good work, offer small incentives, and provide public recognition.
Be firm, not wicked. Be kind, not foolish.
5. Get Parents Back on Your Side.
Communicate early and clearly:
👉Academic goals for the term.
👉Behaviour expectations.
Fee timelines (no surprises).
Silence creates suspicion. Clear communication builds trust and prompt payment.
6. Secure Your Finances Early.
Second term eats money:
Activities
Projects
Exams
Maintenance
Plan your budget now. Enforce your fee policy without apology. A school that begs cannot lead.
7. Focus on Children, Not Competition.
Stop chasing other schools. Focus on:
👉Child progress.
👉Teacher quality.
👉School culture.
Parents can smell authenticity, they stay where their children grow.
8. Prepare for Third Term and Next Session From Week One.
Yes, already.
Identify pupils needing intervention.
Begin revision gradually.
Plan end-of-session demands early.
Successful schools think two steps ahead.
Final Word to School Owner...
The second term doesn’t need magic.
It needs leadership, structure, consistency, and courage.
When the owner is serious, the school aligns.
When the owner is absent, chaos applies for admission.
Run your second term like a mission not a routine.
You’ve got this. Now lead. 💪📚

*Here are some things that a teacher (you) may need to put in place before school resumption:*

5. *Communication Plan:* Establish a communication plan with parents and guardians, including regular updates on student progress and important school events. To have a successful term, you must come up with a communication line of how you communicate to your parents differently, don't use the same approach in communicating with your parents.

12. *Emergency Procedures:* Review and update emergency procedures, such as fire drills and safety measures to ensure all learners are safe.
13. *Parent-Teacher Conferences*: Schedule parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and goals with parents and guardians. Don't wait until Open Day before you communicate with your parents, you can invite them to school through the management if the needs arises.
14. *Classroom Orientation*: Plan a classroom orientation to welcome all your learners as soon as they resume to review classroom expectations, and establish a positive classroom culture etc.
15. *Mental Health and Wellness:* Prepare strategies to support student/Pupil mental health and wellness, such as mindfulness exercises and stress management techniques.
16. *Diverse Learning Needs*: Prepare to support pupils/students with diverse learning needs, such as spelling, reading, concentration, pupils/students with learning disabilities, and gifted students.

*Conclusion:*
By putting these things in place, a teacher (you) can ensure a smooth and successful start to the new term, and provide a supportive and engaging learning environment for their learners.
