Africa Month is more than a celebration; it's a powerful reminder of our shared history, collective identity, and limitless potential.

At SMAD, Africa Month is our reminder that borders may separate us, but ideas can unite us. This year, we chose to honor that spirit not just in words but in action through the Pan-African Case Study Challenge which we launched a few weeks ago

Why now? Because unity isn’t just a dream, it’s a strategy. This 4-week virtual exchange is designed to bring African students together to solve problems, share perspectives, and stretch the possibilities of collaboration across cultures and disciplines.

It’s not just a program. It’s a statement that African students don’t have to leave the continent to think globally. That meaningful collaboration doesn’t need a visa. That innovation happens when we listen to each other across time zones, borders, and bandwidths.

This challenge is our contribution to the long work of building not just Pan-Africanism in theory but Pan-Africanism in practice.

We recently conducted a survey across Nigerian tertiary institutions, and one key finding stood out:

🔍 85% of students say they’ve never heard of COIL/VE.

What is COIL/VE?

COIL stands for Collaborative Online International Learning

VE stands for Virtual Exchange

Together, COIL/VE refers to a powerful teaching and learning approach that connects students and faculty from different countries for collaborative learning without leaving their classrooms.

Imagine a Nigerian medical student working with a peer in the U.S. on a public health challenge. Or an engineering class in Lagos building solutions with students in Germany, all online, all co-created.
