Financial Parenting Principles Worth Stealing From Jewish Families — 4

Teach Children to Give From What They Have

One striking principle in Jewish tradition is tzedakah - the practice of giving to help others, understood not merely as occasional generosity but as a responsibility connected to justice and doing what is right.

And there is a powerful parenting lesson here, don't wait until your child has "enough" before teaching them to give.

Children can learn to set aside a portion of what they receive - allowance, gifts, earnings or other money, to support someone in need or contribute to a cause they care about.

More importantly, let them participate in the decision.

The goal isn't to raise children who simply hand over money because an adult told them to.

The goal is to raise children who understand that money is not only for what I want. It can also be used to make someone else's life better.

Giving teaches empathy.
Giving teaches responsibility.
Giving teaches gratitude.
And giving helps children understand that having something also comes with the opportunity to share.

Don't just teach your children how to make money. Teach them what money is for.

Family time doesn't have to be expensive. ❤️

Sometimes, the moments children remember most are the ordinary ones such as cooking together, eating, laughing, playing and simply being together.

Make the ordinary meaningful.

Give your children money to manage. Every mistake becomes a lesson in the long run. A financial mistake of 100k at 16 is better than a financial mistake of 25 million at 25.

Financial Parenting Principles Worth Stealing From Jewish Families - 3: Teach Saving Before Spending

One financial lesson worth learning from Jewish family traditions is the importance of teaching children to save before they spend.

A child who spends every naira as soon as it arrives never gets to experience the satisfaction of waiting for something bigger.

Saving teaches children that money doesn't have to disappear simply because they have it.

When children receive pocket money, gifts, or allowances, encourage them to set something aside first. It doesn't have to be a large amount. What matters is developing the habit.

Let them save toward something they genuinely want, a book, gadget, bicycle, outing, or another meaningful goal.

And don't rush to rescue them when they spend their money too quickly. Sometimes, discovering that "I spent it all, and now I can't afford what I really wanted" is a powerful financial lesson.

Let us not only raise children who are afraid to spend money. Instead, let us raise children who understand that saving creates choices.

Teach them to pause before spending.

Earn. Save. Then spend wisely - that is a financial habit worth starting while they are still young.

Teaching Your Teenagers Manipulative Traps - 1: The “If You Really Love Me…” Trap

“If you really loved me, you would do this for me.”

“If you cared about me, you wouldn’t say no.”

“If you love me, keep this between us.”

Teenagers can be pressured by friends, romantic interests, or even people they trust through words that make them feel guilty for setting boundaries.

The manipulation is simple, to make them believe that saying NO means they don't love or care.

Teach your teenager that love does not require them to violate their values, boundaries, safety, or conscience.

As a parent, don't only tell them, “Don't be pressured.” Teach them what pressure sounds like. Let them know they can say, “I care about you, but I'm not doing that.”

And most importantly, make your home a safe place for them to tell you when someone is pressuring them, without immediately blaming, shaming, or attacking them.

Real love allows you to say NO.

Parenting Principles Worth Stealing From The Dutch 5: Don't Make Childhood a Competition

Your child's development doesn't have to be a race against another child.

Every child will not speak at the same age, read at the same level, grow at the same pace, score the highest grades, discover a talent early, or reach milestones on the same timeline.

Sometimes, without realizing it, parents turn childhood into a competition.

"Look at your cousin."
"Your classmate is already doing this."
"At your age, your sister could..."

Comparison may motivate briefly, but it can also make a child feel that being themselves is not enough.

Pay attention to your child's progress, not someone else's timeline. Celebrate growth, identify areas that need support, provide opportunities to learn, and challenge your child to improve but don't make another child the measuring stick for their worth.

Children need room to develop at their own pace while still being guided to reach their potential.

You are not tasked to raise a child who is ahead of everyone but a child who is growing and learning everyday.

Financial Parenting Principles Worth Stealing From Jewish Families: 2

Give Children Their Own Money to Manage.

Don't wait until your child becomes an adult before allowing them to make financial decisions.

Give them age-appropriate control over some money.

Let them decide:

✅️ What to spend.
✅️ What to save.
✅️ What to give.
✅️ What to postpone buying.
✅️ And sometimes, what to waste.

Yes, they may make mistakes but that is part of the lesson.

A child who is never allowed to handle money may grow into an adult who earns money but doesn't know how to manage it.

The goal isn't to give children unlimited money but to give them controlled opportunities to practise financial decision-making while the consequences are still small.

Let them learn that money is a resource, not magic.

Small financial mistakes in childhood can become valuable lessons for adulthood.

Does your child only know how to ask you for money, or are they learning how to manage money?

Teach children that money has three jobs: GIVE, SAVE and SPEND.

Some Jewish family traditions have used this simple practice for years, starting when children are young.

The goal isn't just to teach money management. It's to build generosity, patience and responsibility.

Don't wait until your child is an adult to teach them about money.

Start small. Start early. Build the habit.

Would you try this with your child?

Parenting Principles Worth Stealing From The Dutch 🇳🇱 — Part 3

Family Time Doesn't Have to Be Expensive.

Family connection doesn't always require a restaurant, an outing, a vacation, or elaborate entertainment.

Sometimes, family time is simply cooking together, eating dinner without phones, taking a walk, playing a board game, doing household chores together, talking before bedtime, or sitting around the house sharing stories.

Children don't necessarily need expensive experiences to feel connected to their parents. They need presence.

A parent who is emotionally available during ordinary moments may create memories that money cannot buy.

So, don't wait for the perfect weekend or enough money for an expensive outing or a vacation to another country before you create family memories.

Make the ordinary meaningful because sometimes, the family moments children remember most are the ones that cost nothing.

What ordinary family activity brings everyone together in your home?
