Skills, Not Just Schooling – The UTVESDI Imperative
Nigeria’s unemployment crisis is not because there are no jobs. It is because millions of Nigerian youths lack the right skills for the jobs that do exist.
In the oil and construction sectors alone, there are over 500,000 vacant roles requiring skilled professionals in:
Plumbing
Carpentry
Drywall Installation
Welding
Roofing
Masonry
Yet, most Nigerians are not trained for these jobs. As a result, Nigeria imports skilled workers every year from India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Pakistan, Ghana, Togo, and Benin Republic to fill these roles—jobs that Nigerians could and should be doing.
Meanwhile, universities continue to graduate hundreds of thousands of degree holders in fields such as:
Sociology
Philosophy
Linguistics
Political Science
Library Science
Religious Studies
Anthropology
These graduates often struggle with unemployment. Not because Nigeria has no jobs, but because their qualifications do not match labour market demands. There are jobs. But there are not enough skilled Nigerians to take them.

Education
Many other degrees are becoming less economically viable, especially in a digital-first, skills-based world. In several advanced economies, these courses are being shut down or phased out as unproductive.
In contrast, a non-graduate with practical skills in:
Cloud Computing
App and Web Development
Cybersecurity

Laboratory Technology
Digital Marketing
..is often more employable and better paid than a graduate of a non-technical discipline.
