Education in Africa has lost its way. What now passes for learning is little more than a mechanical exercise, void of soul, meaning, and purpose. We have built schools that can fill minds with information but cannot form character; we have produced generations that can think quickly but not deeply.
When the Soul No Longer Counts: On the Decline of Meaning and the Recovery of True Learning is a bold call to rediscover the true purpose of education. Drawing from classical Christian thought, it challenges the utilitarian ideals of modern schooling and restores education to its rightful end: the cultivation of wisdom, virtue, and love for what is true, good, and beautiful.
Through chapters such as Function and Purpose, Form, Then Function, and The Aesthetics of Education, the author unveils how our obsession with function has eclipsed the purpose of learning itself. In Separation of Mind and State and Education for a Religious People, he calls for a recovery of parental stewardship and a renewal of the moral and spiritual foundations of education.
This is not a book about reforming schools. It is a book about recovering vision, a vision that sees education not as an industry but as a sacred act of forming souls.
For parents, teachers, and thinkers who believe that civilization begins in the classroom and that culture flows from the soul, this book is both a lament and a roadmap. It is a summons to rebuild education upon the enduring truths that once shaped the world. -

We live in a culture in which the bare minimum has become the norm and the pursuit of excellence is increasingly rare.
Builders are more concerned with speed than with the standards that would keep their structures standing. Mechanics repair broken vehicles yet neglect to replace bolts the manufacturer deemed essential. Schools are painted in bright colours, yet their owners and teachers despise true knowledge. Political actors are preoccupied with prolonging their access to wealth and power, not gained by productive enterprise, but by proximity to authority. Ours is a perilous time, yet it is seldom treated as such, largely because many are beneficiaries of the moral and intellectual collapse of our age.
The greater tragedy is that Christians, who ought to set the highest and most uncompromising standards in every sphere of life, have conformed to the mediocrity of the times. The absence of eternal standards that governs the world has come to govern the home as well. Many of us have become willing participants in the very evils we lament. In our own education and in that of our children, we settle for the minimum. We study not to gain wisdom, to wrestle with great ideas, or to build a culture worthy of preservation, but merely to outwit a broken system. In our churches, the standards of Scripture in doctrine and practice are neglected. As a result, men whose god is their appetite and whose lives are marked by moral compromise occupy the pulpit. Their sin is excused either by misplaced appeals to authority or by the shallow refrain, “Let God judge.” It has become, in effect, a race to the bottom.
This ought not to be so. God has called His people to exceedingly high standards. Indeed, the standard is so high that apart from Christ we could never meet it. Yet, it remains our responsibility to order our homes, schools, professions, and civic life according to that divine measure. Our culture is broken, but it can be restored if Christians refuse the world’s minimalism and instead embrace the highest standards set by the Word of God.
Practically, this means seeking for ourselves and for our children the best form of education—what I believe to be a truly Classical Christian education. It means writing literature worthy to stand beside Homer and Virgil, creating art that lifts the soul toward heaven, composing music that echoes the discipline and beauty of Bach, and building public spaces that reflect order, harmony, and splendour.
This is how cultural renewal is wrought: not by complaint, but by faithful, excellent, and sacrificial labour.

WHEN THE SOUL NO LONGER COUNTS
By Daniel Olushola
We are living in an age that worships function and efficiency but forgets form and meaning. Our schools are full, yet our souls are empty. We have mastered the art of doing but forgotten the mystery of being.
Education once existed to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and beauty, to turn the soul toward truth. Today, it exists to produce workers, consumers, and citizens of a system that no longer believes in God or understands man. The classroom has become an engine of conformity, and the child, a resource to be optimized.
This book, When the Soul No Longer Counts, is a meditation and a lament, but also a call to arms. It traces how education lost its telos, how truth, goodness, and beauty were severed from learning, and how the State came to rule the mind that was meant to belong to God.
It is also a vision for recovery: a return to the classical Christian understanding of education as the formation of the soul. The ancients knew that knowledge without virtue is dangerous, that intellect without love is barren, and that a man who learns everything but cannot order his desires is not educated but enslaved.
Our world is collapsing under the weight of its cleverness. We need to rebuild education not on innovation but on wisdom, not on utility but on holiness.
When the Soul No Longer Counts calls parents, pastors, and teachers to reclaim the mind for Christ, to restore beauty to learning, and to raise children whose education will not end in success but in sanctity.
The renewal of civilization will not begin in parliament or policy but in the quiet rooms where children are taught to love the true, the good, and the beautiful.
Coming January 5th, 2026, a summons to remember that the soul still counts.
