Legendary Nollywood actor and Movie producer Patrick Doyle Shares his Opinion on Brain Jotter and Mike Ejeagha’s Copyright Saga.

“The duration sound clip as used is less than the required duration to qualify for royalty sharing on what is essentially an audio visual work conceived by Brain Jotter. This is the position as per intellectual property protocols. Whatever he gifted the old man in appreciation for his audio clip is simply that, a gift. The good news is, the audio visual work has revived interest in the old man's works. He can now begin to earn from the renewed interest in his repertoire”.

*Title: The Economic Implications of a Stagnant Minimum Wage on Civil and Public Servants in Nigeria:* *An Examination of the Impact of Fuel Prices on Purchasing Power and Strategies for Income Support*

*Introduction*

Nigeria's recent agreement to increase the minimum wage to ₦70,000 has been met with mixed reactions, as many argue that it is still inadequate to address the economic challenges faced by civil and public servants. This article examines the economic implications of a stagnant minimum wage on civil and public servants in Nigeria, with a focus on the impact of fuel prices on purchasing power. I will also provide recommendations on how reducing fuel prices can help boost the purchasing power of Nigerians and suggest strategies for civil and public servants to support their income in the midst of this economic development.

*The Current State of Minimum Wage in Nigeria*

The minimum wage in Nigeria has been increased to ₦70,000, effective January 2024 (Federal Government of Nigeria, 2024). However, this increase has been criticized for being inadequate, considering the country's high inflation rate, which has consistently exceeded 15% in recent years (National Bureau of Statistics, 2022).

*The Impact of Fuel Prices on Purchasing Power*

Fuel prices have a direct impact on the cost of living in Nigeria. With the country relying heavily on imported fuel, fluctuations in global oil prices have a ripple effect on the economy. The recent increase in fuel prices from ₦145 to ₦165, and now to ₦617 and ₦690, depending on the fuel station, has led to a surge in transportation costs, food prices, and other essential commodities, further eroding the purchasing power of civil and public servants.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (2022), the average price of petrol in Nigeria increased by 341% between 2020 and 2023, representing a significant decline in purchasing power. This increase has had a devastating impact on the purchasing power of Nigerians, particularly civil and public servants, who have seen their disposable income decline significantly.

*Economic Implications*

The stagnant minimum wage and high fuel prices have severe economic implications for civil and public servants in Nigeria. Some of these implications include:

*1. Reduced Purchasing Power:* The decline in purchasing power has resulted in reduced consumer spending, which has a negative impact on economic growth.
*2. Increased Poverty:* The inability of civil and public servants to afford basic necessities has led to increased poverty levels, with many struggling to make ends meet.
*3. Decreased Productivity:* The economic hardship faced by civil and public servants has resulted in decreased productivity, as many are forced to take on multiple jobs to supplement their income.
*4. Brain Drain:* The economic challenges faced by civil and public servants have led to a brain drain, with many seeking better opportunities abroad.

*Strategies for Income Support*

To support their income, civil and public servants can consider the following strategies:

*1. Entrepreneurship:* Starting a side business or investing in entrepreneurial ventures can provide an additional source of income.
*2. Skill Acquisition:* Acquiring new skills or certifications can enhance career prospects and increase earning potential.
*3. Investment:* Investing in stocks, real estate, or other investment vehicles can provide a passive income stream.
*4. Cooperative Societies:* Joining cooperative societies or thrift clubs can provide access to low-interest loans and other financial benefits.

*Recommendations*

To address the economic implications of a stagnant minimum wage and high fuel prices, we recommend the following:

*1. Increase the Minimum Wage:* The government should consider increasing the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living.
*2. Reduce Fuel Prices:* The government should explore ways to reduce fuel prices, including increasing local fuel production and reducing importation costs.
*3. Implement Fuel Subsidies reinvestment programs:* The government should consider implementing fuel subsidies reinvestment programs in various forms to cushion the impact of high fuel prices on civil and public servants.
*4. Improve Energy Efficiency:* The government should invest in energy-efficient technologies to reduce the country's reliance on fuel imports.

*Conclusion*

The economic implications of a stagnant minimum wage and high fuel prices on civil and public servants in Nigeria are far-reaching. To address these challenges, the government must take decisive action to increase the minimum wage, reduce fuel prices, and implement fuel subsidies. Additionally, civil and public servants can support their income by exploring entrepreneurial ventures, acquiring new skills, investing in stocks or real estate, and joining cooperative societies. By working together, we can boost the purchasing power of Nigerians and promote economic growth.
