A real man never ever bullies anyone

It was narrated that 'Aishah (RA) said:

"The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) never beat any of his servants, or wives, and his hand never hit anything."

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 3, Book 9, Hadith 2060)

The Prophet once ﷺ made a du'a for his beloved wife and said, "O Allah, forgive A'ishah of her past sins and her future sins, the hidden of them and the apparent." She became so overjoyed that she began to laugh and placed her head upon the Prophet's ﷺ lap. رضي الله عنها

He then asked, "Does this supplication make you happy? Wallahi, I make this du'a for every single person in my ummah in every prayer." How fortunate are we to be from the ummah of the most merciful man Allāh ever created!

MY MOTHER, MY WIFE AND MY DAUGHTER

I pray for my mother, my wife and my only daughter everyday and I pray for all women as often as I can, especially from the day I realised that poverty is endemic but women are most affected as they are indeed poorer than men. And because they often live longer than men, most women who are poor at young age, are poorer at old age. They often live long after their husbands have died making them live long as divorcees or live long childless. In northern Nigeria, since women hardly work to earn a living and they form the greater percentage of illiterates, their old age is often pathetic.

In fact in our society, especially in rural communities ‘sune ake kira mayu or ‘Karama’en’ (in Fulfulde) musamman in sun fito diga poor families or basu da dangi mai tsawo’

Recently I paid a condolence visit to a former boss in Zaria who was almost almost 70 years old. He told me that his father died 50 years ago and his mother had remained unmarried for that long.

My father died in March, 1987 when I was in the law school in Lagos but my mother died on 17 July, 2018. She lived 31 years without him. If not for the fact that she had 5 of us, male children, only God knows how she would have coped with living life as a widow for 31 years, without modern education and without a paying job.

This is one of the reasons why I am passionate about female education. It is simply because poverty is a woman thing. It is also why I always urge men to give female children modern education that will enable them work to earn a living and to help their mothers who usually live longer than we, men. ‘Mata suna da tausayi’ especially towards their mothers.

Recently I found a publication based on research conducted by credible development organisations, credible Foundations and International Aid Agencies that revealed the following interesting statistics.

1. The United Nations International Children Emergency Fund UNICEF says a child born to a literate mother is 50% less likely to die before the age of 5.

2. The Malala Foundation had found out that each additional year of school a girl completed, cuts both infant mortality rate and child marriage rates.

3. The UNICEF also says every extra year of education is estimated to increase a girl’s earning power by 10-20%.

4. The World Bank says encourage girls to earn a living and they will invest 90% of their income back into their families. More than twice as much as men.

5. The World Bank also found that a 1% increase in female education raises the average GDP by 0.3% and annual GDP growth rates by 0. 2%.

These statistics are more than enough reasons for you to ensure that your wives and daughters acquire modern education and work to earn a living.

I was born and bred in a village. I know how many of my friends who married illiterate mothers lost their children to preventable diseases because the wives were illiterates. Take my words for this.

Undoubtedly if you encourage an educated woman to earn a living, she will certainly invest 90% of her income back into the family. I am a living witness.

Years ago when I was in Habib Bank at Post Office branch, Kano where I was in charge of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states as loans officer, I arranged the approval of about 70% of small scale holder loans to women in rural areas in Kachako and Zakirai branches in Kano state, Kankara, Malumfashi and Zangon Daura branches in Katsina state.

I was reported to the management for favouring women. When my manager asked me to explain why, I showed him the list of loan defaulters who were 90% men who, I believe, took the loans and married more women with bank loan. I also showed him the list of those who paid back the loans which was almost 100% women. In fact the women who could not pay back their loans often told us that it was their husbands who borrowed the money we gave them as loans and refused to pay back to the wives.

‘Yaya za’ayi ka karbi bashi a wajen matarka kuma kaki biya?’ In fact some of the women who insisted that their husbands pay back were threatened with divorce.

I still remember when my ‘Oga’ the branch manager jokingly said to me “wallahi Sadiq I thought you were going out with all those old women that was why you give them loans”. We both laughed it off because he knew I was much younger and had no access to them anyway. I lived in Kano while they lived several kilometres away and it was managers at the rural branches who submitted the applications. So there was no way I could have seen the faces of those rural women even if I had wanted to.

Even today, if I have the opportunity, I don’t lend money to men. Lend a woman money, for as long as she is not your girlfriend and see. Wallahi she will pay back ‘sharp-sharp’. But if you lend to your girlfriend and she refused to pay, if she hires me as her lawyer, you are in trouble.

Not only that, I have discovered when I was in Kano, that some men borrow to add a wife and even borrow to perform naming ceremonies.

Again as I have always been encouraging you, young guys, please try to marry female graduates and allow them to work to earn a living or do business, even from home. They will take care not only of themselves, but of their aged mothers and your children when you die earlier, as is often the case.

In the end, I urge you to please help our mothers.Trust them and make opportunities available to them by allowing them go to school.
